Stopped in this morning on the way back from Meadowbank. Didn't see much in the way of real bargains, but picked up two frame bags (one for me; one spare for family) given that they were £5 marked down from£15 - the ones that sit behind the stem, on top of the tube.

Older guy at the desk thought he was being clever (or that I was exceptionally clueless) and asked me if I realised I had two of the same thing.

    gah!

Did you lower yourself to his level and explain that you were fully aware and were planning to wear them around the house as a pair of slipper.

I picked one of these up from Tesco this week on an impulse. It has a clear top so can be used to mount a mobile phone/gps unit. It cost 40% more than yours though.

I bought three identical pairs of socks in their sale without question (but I was bemused by the manufacturer sizing guides, whereby adult male 'small' size socks were apparently equated to the UK shoe size range 2.5 - 4.5? A bit of research suggests that 3 - 5 is the normal range for 'small' so I suppose it isn't that far off. I suppose I just never really thought about the issue of sock sizing much before).

For several years I've been threatening to try a Revolution bar bag when they're on sale, but can never quite face faffing about with my wires and cables to make enough space. I finally stopped replacing my Revolution Rixen/Kaul saddlebag this spring when I ran out of repaired example at home and they appeared to have stopped selling them in the shops and on the website.

@SRD - those bags are really useful - I was out killing the hills in mid and east lothian today and forgot mine - they are great for filling with nuts / jelly babies or whatever (although some EPO might have been better for me today)

Went in to Co Op yesterday and the sale shoes were not my size or fit - shame as they had some nice ones.

Ended up buying a full price pair.......fail

Still want a frame bag for my MTB to do a bit of rough camping / bikepacking - but I cant fathom any reason I would pay £95 for an ortlieb one, perhaps I am just tight?

    Grumble, grumble, grumble...

I had another encounter today with the salesperson above that confirmed all my previous encounters. I went in to by a particular part that was exactly what I needed. He sold it to me, but then afterwards, started trying to sell me something different. I explained that what I needed was correct for small framebikes such as I ride, and my kids bikes.

So, on the one hand, he did sell me the part I needed, but on the other why then try to second-guess me? Contrast this with MrSRd who recently dealt with same guy: asked for a fairly specific part and was sold it.

Then as I was leaving, he 'reminded' me to put my lights on. I cannot imagine him reminding any male customers about this!

I'm sure it was meant to be nice, and it was in the context of an earlier discussion about the helmet, but I still felt condescenced to.

Which is not how I normally feel when I visit a local shop instead of some faceless online dealer that doesn't ask my gender before selling me something!

There are one or two slightly oddball people working at EBC lately. I was returning a pair of gloves that were coming apart, and it was like twenty questions coming from someone who couldn't really care less. By the end of it, I felt like I wasn't entirely sure if they were going to exchange them or not.

I went back the next day with my gloves and had a chat with Chas, whom I've known a long time, and it was no bother at all.

If you ever feel smaller leaving a shop than when you went in*, either be sure to complain, or shop somewhere else next time.

Yes, Mini SRD is a big fan of Chas too.

I go through phases of shoppinh elsewhere, then think I should support my LBS, and it's convenient! But heck, I would like to be treated the same way MrSRD is, not second-guessed!

Hey SRD, do you think this guy. Typical of all. EBC staff? There is a chap in the shop who has a funny kind of interaction with me, little bit Uriah heep, little bit superior, lttle bit trying to help, little bit trying to connect with the customers, I wonder if same guy? Mr SRD reports no issues at all?

Obviosuly there is some degree of confirmation bias that we may both have. The other time I was in I kind of let it slide whilst trying on every helmet in the shop, getting him to get them all down but not buying anything. Amused me anyway.

As Jacquie Phelan says "1 Choosing a Shop - walk into store, making a mental note of your sense of height in inches when you go in. Wait for service, observe the reception you get, talk (if you can get the fellow's attention), then take note of your stature upon leaving the store. If you feel appreciably smaller, do not return. Find another bike shop, and hope for a real human connection, a salesperson interested in what you want to do on your new bike, how you intend to use it."

@gembo yes, my heart did sink when I saw him, but I knew exactly what I wanted. I also knew that the website said it wasn't in stock at this store (but knowing how unreliable that tends to be, I thought it was worth a try). And indeed it was right there, and he pulled it out, tried it to make sure it fit, and sold it to me. Thought it was all going fine. should have just run out the door then.
