The traffic fouling of the current frequency of Tram service and the closure of the central section (when the Leith extension opens especially) with cut off trams from the depot when Princes Street is used as a mass event space.

It makes even clearer the case to put the Trams under Princes Street, so that they can be used to get the crowds in and out and keep running. This would also allow the placing of tram stops where they make sense for users (like at the West end of Princes Street and directly connected to Waverley Station via Waverley Market) It would also remove all the complexity of junctions at Picardy Place Waverley Bridge and Queensferry Street and put the trams in the right place to deliver junctions for North Bridge/Waterloo Place and Lothian Road/Queensferry Street so that tracks could rise up in the centre of the street at Leith Street and other routes.

Is the headline benefit of maintaining a through-service for about three days a year really worth the cost and disruption of such a massive civil engineering project?
