While Cllr Gloyer has been fretting about lawless cyclists this sort of thing happens in the neighbouring ward to hers.

Edinburgh's Cycling Champion

Clearly this wouldn't have happened if the council had appointed a Driving Champion, then got her or him to use their influence within the AA to ask them to speak out about inconsiderate drivers.

OK, so nine months in...
What has David Key done for cycling so far?
From what I can see, he's intervened on the Leith St temporary cycle lanes and on the Silverknowes roundabout...
...but that's about it.
Anyone else have any visibility on what he's doing (or not doing)?
He seems very low-key (pun intended) to me.

He came and met us at Canal Bpoat cafe last Friday?
Posted 6 years ago # -
Did he allude to all the fabby things he has achieved & is going to achieve?
...tumbleweeds passing...
Posted 6 years ago # -
He was quite droll

Not trolling but ... When I first saw mention of 'Edinburgh's Cycling Champion' I assumed it was an in-joke which I wasn't privy to.
Months later I still do not understand if this is a self proclaimed title or a real position. In the context of actual achievements maybe it's a moot point.

Remember this tweet...
That was soon after he was appointed - I did try a PY invite soon after but it didn't work out. Not being a regular PY attendee, it was only the last one where I tried again.
"Months later I still do not understand if this is a self proclaimed title or a real position. "
The remit/roles & responsibilities of the champion were set out here...
"Cycling Champion
Act as the Council’s champion for cycling, the cycling network and active travel across the region."" The roles and responsibilities of the Champion will potentially include some of the following descriptions as a guide:
Act as an ambassador for their specified area, which includes taking responsibility for maintaining and raising the profile of their area.
Support the work of the committee convenors through working in a collaborative role and feeding into the decision-making role of the relevant
convenors.
Contribute to the development of policy in Edinburgh of their area and providing leadership and guidance when required.
Act as a local expert and advocate working with and engaging with communities across the city.
Ensure focus is maintained on achieving the desired objectives and outcomes of their area."Posted 6 years ago # -
He is extremely low key. I'm not sure I could point to a single achievement. Has he even expressed an opinion on the abominable plans for the Tram extension?
I chatted to him at the last Spokes meeting. He's a jolly nice chap, but we could really do with him being a bit more forthright and conspicuous.
Chas Booth is a far more effective cycling champion, albeit not in any official sense.

I've never even heard of him. Obviously his championing needs to go up a few gears...
Chas is a great bloke - he's been very helpful to me in sorting out local road safety and cycling-related issues over the last few years, when no other councillor could be bothered responding. We could really do with a cycling champion like Chas.

Never heard of him either, would tend to think a minority woman may be better choice, with cycling been seen as a bit of a middle aged men thing, be better to have someone that is not to encourage wider participation; plus they may get more column inches

Spokes has recently been wondering how best he could be used - what to point him at. Wondering whether he can be an additional lever for the tram, but it really needs to come from the top.
There have been a couple of "update" meetings with him since he was appointed - I think at Spokes request.
His predecessor was Adam McVey - not something that many people were aware of at the time, but he did mention cycling quite a lot, but seems to have cut down on that now.
He does seem amenable to meetings.
I'm very much in favour of a Cycling Forum that he could actively participate at - an open meeting on a regular basis.Posted 6 years ago # -
Well he came to the recent NotPY and conversed with various people.
I got the impression he didn’t know how to overcome CEC’s entrenched culture.
If CEC was serious it wouldn’t just land a councilor with extra responsibilities, it would actually appoint an outsider to the staff - valid use of cycling budget.

@chdot, CEC have done that I think? Daisy Narayan from Sustrans?.?
Posted 6 years ago # -
@ g
Yes but no.
Specific job with a very geographical remit.
Now IF CEC planned to use the process and outcomes as a real exemplar/game changer...
How much Daisy achieves, especially given how much has been planned before her arrival, remains to be seen.
In parallel (but probably not in synch) Leith Walk.

I wonder if we'll get a mention (especially as I forgot to buy his PY coffee)?

David Key is running in next year's London marathon, and raising money for Jeans for Genes.

Cllr Key stepped down as Cycling Champion some time ago and the Active Travel Champion has not been announced as far as I know. Cllr Key has said he will find out what is happening.
Posted 5 years ago # -
Remarkable. Cllr Key has been so low-key as cycling champion that we didn't even notice he'd stepped down. A disappointing tenure. I hope we have someone more vocal and engaged as the next incumbent.

Meanwhile Gavin Corbett seems to have been doing sterling work as Canal Champion. I wish he would take on cycling.
