Call to extend driving offences to cycling

    Prime minister's questions

    House of Commons

    Parliament

Labour's Heidi Alexander calls for dangerous driving offences to be extended to cyclists, labelling the current framework "inadequate", following the death of HR consultant Kim Briggs.

Theresa May says it's welcome that a prosecution was successfully made in this case, and the transport secretary will be able to look at ensuring the law stays up to date. "

Puzzling that politicians are willing to jump on bandwagons. I can't see any obvious connection between Ms. Alexander and the case in question. Any law in this regard would turn out to be another Dangerous Dogs Act. In principle harmonisation of the offences for both motor vehicle drivers and bicycle riders might be ok, but drafting the legislation would be extremely hard, for practically no benefit, and furthermore, I think a good advocate could have got Alliston off a charge of Causing Death by Dangerous Cycling. My main worry about legislation would be the temptation to include (or at least debate) licencing, etc.

Correction: Kim Briggs was Heidi Alexander's constituent. Lots of "Here, here" when she asked the question. Doesn't imo make a change in the law any more desirable or helpful though.

Clearly never heard the maxim "hard cases make bad law and politicians make bad judges". Morons.

There will surely be no legislative space for such a law in Westminster for the next ten years.

Of course it will soon be possible for ministers to create one through an Order in Council without parliamentary pettifogging.

I actually see this as something of an opportunity. When the public consultation into wider road safety issues opens, cycling organisations and as many individual cyclists as possible should request the introduction of strict liability.

A few thousand responses and it would probably have to be considered. I don't see it being introduced - but it would put those motorists using this incident as a stick to beat cyclists with in a bind. Support strict liability to help improve pedestrian (and cyclist) safety, or revert to Mr Toad and shoot the idea down as being bad for motorists.
