Hmmm - the GMB rep doesn't mention the Low Emission Zone. He blames the increase in rats on cuts and the consequent lack of cleansing staff.

Always worth reading the small print…

‘Amazing’ how often the headlines don’t represent the story!(?)

Yet the tactic of publishing fake papers was used successfully in Uxbridge and South Ruislip last month, with the party’s ‘Uxbridge and South Ruislip People’ urging people to “Stop ULEZ” (Labour London Mayor Sadiq Khan’s Ultra Low Emissions Zone expansion). The fake magazine mirrored the title of the local council-run Hillingdon People, which is meant to be apolitical.

    From March

As parents walk with their children next to four lanes of fume-belching traffic in Kingston, Oliver Lord sighs. “We shouldn’t be setting a carer with a car against a mum looking after her son with asthma in hospital,” says Lord, who is head of strategy for the Clean Cities campaign.

He and other campaigners are dismayed at how clean air has become a political battleground, with tensions rising over plans to extend an ultra-low emission zone (Ulez) to cover the whole of Greater London.

Semi-retired delivery driver’s Ulez challenge dismissed by High Court judge

Mr White argued that Mr Khan’s “stated objective” – to “clean up London’s toxic air and tackle the climate emergency” – was unlawful because it had not been mandated by Parliament.

That he's "very impressed with...Kier Starmer" tells you all you need to know really doesn't it.

The interests of some of the most powerful industries on Earth are represented as the interests of the working man and woman, trying to go about their business while greens and bureaucrats impede them. In reality, those who drive for their living – such as taxi drivers, couriers and rubbish collectors – have the greatest exposure to toxic diesel fumes.

We could achieve cheaper, more effective mobility with a fraction of the pollution. With the right incentives, we could also heat our homes without poisoning our neighbours. If you don’t have the evidence required to win an argument, there’s a ready alternative: set people against each other by stoking a culture war. Low emission zones and low-traffic neighbourhoods have been the subjects of grotesque falsehoods in the media, lurid conspiracy theories and dark money lobbying. As the London mayor, Sadiq Khan, pointed out this week, hundreds of thousands of pounds have been spent on troll farms on social media attacking London’s ultra-low emission zone (Ulez). We don’t know where this money came from, but it may have been decisive in securing a Conservative win in the Uxbridge byelection.

Edinburgh Council is to spend £55m replacing over 1,000 vehicles to ensure its fleet is compliant with the city’s new Low Emission Zone.

The local authority currently owns 801 vehicles and has 547 hired or leased from a third party. The plan to replace two-thirds of the fleet...

A report said there were 282 council vehicles on the roads which do not meet the LEZ’s requirements and these would be prioritised for replacement.

    So which one is it?

This FOI response from June 2022 gives some idea of the numbers and vehicle types and usage. In December 2022 CEC said it had 357 vehicles that weren't LEZ-compliant, and also released a full fleet list - there are bin lorries and gritters and little tractors and lots of vans and tipper trucks. A FOI request lodged at the start of this month, and not answered yet, asks about the number of vehicles that are not Euro 4 petrol and Euro 6 diesel.

The headline is, unsurprisingly, misleading. The article contains the actual numbers and states that are 282 vehicles which need replaced because of the LEZ.

"The local authority currently owns 801 vehicles and has 547 hired or leased from a third party. The plan to replace two-thirds of the fleet will increase the number of cars, vans and lorries owned by the authority which will in turn create new in-house maintenance jobs.

A report said there were 282 council vehicles on the roads which do not meet the LEZ’s requirements and these would be prioritised for replacement."

Sadly car brained motonormativity means they have not taken the option of buying faster/ more appropriate vehicles (AKA bicycles). I'm would guess that a reasonable number of their motor vehicles are doing jobs that could very easily be converted to e-bikes, especially if they chose ones with a closed cab.

Yes they could follow NHS Lothian's lead and try a couple of small cargobikes.
That said I rarely see the bikes in use but often see NHS Nissan e-vans stuck in traffic in city centre.

Wouldn't be surprised if they had considered bikes and been advised they shouldn't for safety/liability reasons.
