The Green amendment is a good result as far as I'm concerned. The LEZ as it stood wouldn't have reduced emissions significantly lower than what would have happened organically anyway. This is because most of the non-compliant vehicles would be scrapped before enforcement.

Honestly, the best way to reduce emissions (of all gases) in the city is to remove 90% of on-street parking and implement bus gates and modal filters. Add on top a surcharge for permit parking of oversized vehicles and Bob is your uncle.

A bus network which is never hindered by general traffic, plus associated reduction in parking/general road space, would massively improve the city while also addressing pollution.

I see Aberdeen's plans for an LEZ are so incredibly timid they may as well not bother. And we thought Edinburgh was bad...

@MB - agree totally. LEZs need to force pace of change not preserve the current toxic mix in city centre.
Courier companies like FarrOut deserve a bit of support on this as they are operating despite any old vehicle spluttering its way into city.

@MB - I suppose the SNP in Glasgow simply cannot lose next year's election, as the mass vote has shifted from Labour. They could announce anything (well, anything non-football related). Not really the case for SNP and Labour in Edinburgh. They have to be a bit more restrained due to the Tories. To be fair, Edinburgh did announce the City Centre Transformation - which isn't massively dissimilar.

Now, about making either of them happen...

    @Morningsider, exactly.

I see Glasgow's active travel network announcement along similar lines to the Scottish Government's "world beating" emissions targets from a number of years back*. Lofty rhetoric, soaring ambition, conveniently timed to wrong foot opponents during a politically expedient "green" posturing phase. Then years and years later, still nothing much happening.

Hopefully Edinburgh's "City Centre Transformation" will eventually be delivered. But in what form? There's a history plain to see of worthy schemes being diluted through consultation and "value engineering" until they're almost worthless. We shall see, in time...

    * - 2008! I thought it was 2011, but no, the initial targets were set 13 years ago. Seems SNP were outvoted by opposition parties, so rather like the trams, this is one "commitment" they have mostly begrudged and paid lip service to over the years.

@crowriver - Cllr Adam McVey was tweeting about importance of low carbon yesterday.

"We're making progress but Edin still emits 2.46m tonnes of CO2 a year.
We need dramatic change to hit net-zero but we've got what it takes to deliver a just transition."

I suggested he gets on with a more ambitious LEZ. Centre of Edinburgh is ready for a bold pro pedestrian and bike environment with cars secondary. Instead we'll have two years of toxic LEZ fudge.

No answer - yet he says 'we need dramatic change'. Dramatic as in what?

    Dramatic as in re-elected.

Recall it could only be worse if the Labour green SNP bloc dont get re elected.

@gembo, local Tories seem to be self-destructing so maybe not that much of a threat unless Webber Mk2 tank appears from nowhere? Lib Dems presumably confined to their bunkers in the western suburbs? Possibly an increased Green vote among the youth?

“Possibly an increased Green vote among the youth?”

    You’d think so.

Maybe the new Green Ministers need to show what’s possible(?)

    If only the youth voted?

Imagine a charismatic AO-C Irn Bru quaffing politician rocked up and said I am saving the planet, you cannot drive single occupant motors into Edinburgh?

    Vote winner?

Revised plans for a Low Emission Zone in the centre of Edinburgh are to be published in January – and council chiefs are hoping the changes won't force them to rerun the consultation process.

    26 isn’t many.

    But 1??!

But officials say none of the objections justify making changes to the scheme and councillors are being recommended to confirm their proposals next week and submit them to Scottish Ministers for consideration.

    26 isn’t many.

Especially when some are objecting because the scheme isn't ambitious enough.

    Does this mean no modification?

No reduction in ridiculous delay in implementation grace period?

Well this is a novel policy

And the Low Emission Zone would be reviewed. “If the Scottish Government insists on an LEZ in Edinburgh it should cover Princes Street alone as this would remove any remaining polluting buses and be far cheaper to enforce.”

There are 900 buses registered in Edinburgh and 171,300 cars. Buses aren't the problem. (Scottish Transport Statistics 2021)

I don't think the majority of bus passengers are tory voters though :). Which makes buses a nice target for the conservatives.

“I don't think the majority of bus passengers are tory voters though :).”

    Well

I’m sure that’s true, partly because the majority of Ed voters don’t vote for them.

    But

Edinburgh has long had a more ‘diverse’ range of bus users than most places.

This may have drifted in recent years, perhaps more because of Covid.

Or maybe even more people are ‘leaving the car at home’ than the Tories know/imagine.

ECT & LRT & LB have all very deliberately made sure they had the most modern fleet as possible (within the reasonable limits of supply and costs).

LRC did a lot to promote PT use with bus lanes, new railway stations etc.

    History…

Quite a few motors lately with really acrid black exhaust fumes. Is that linked to using vegetable oil instead of petrol?

Nah more likely just very poorly maintained diesels. Over fueling, by putting the foot down inappropriately can also cause it.
