I can’t help but think the LEZ is another disproportionate imposition on those with lower household incomes and older cars. It’s as if the workload of Holyrood is aligned with middle class priorities and preferences.

Poor folks in Glasgow live mainly in peripheral estates. They pretty much do;t drive cars into Glasgow. That is rich folks from Busby etc. they won’t have old diesels. Only my pal. Jim had an old diesel.

@chdot because lower income households notoriously never breathe air.

Officers say cycling conditions won't be worsened and traffic will reduce by 11-13%

How could this be the case, as the aim of the Order is to make #MorrisonStreet a LEZ diversion route for polluting vehicles.

A CHARITY which helps feed homeless people in Glasgow has today accused the SNP's deputy leader Keith Brown of misrepresenting it regarding problems with its food delivery vehicles getting into the city's new low emission zone (LEZ).

Spokes mention it's unusual, but there's no reason given I could see: why the hell are the Licensing committee making decisions on road layouts?

Devastated grandma will be 'left isolated' and 'won't be able to drop off granddaughter at nursery' after London ULEZ expansion

The going rate for a 2012 Vauxhall Insignia with ~60k miles is ~£6k. That could easily pay for a compliant car of similar mileage, and have enough change to buy several annual London bus passes.

I work in public health and have been involved in a range of research on active and sustainable travel over the last decade. I am also a Glasgow resident, cycling commuter, dog walker, bus user and car driver. I travel through the city centre by bike most days and so I have a keen personal and professional interest in Scotland’s first LEZ and its likely impact.

Low emission zones (LEZs) and congestion charging zones (CCZs) have been implemented in several cities globally. We systematically reviewed the evidence on the effects of these air pollution and congestion reduction schemes on a range of physical health outcomes.

If they wanted to do shorter round ups of research they could call the journal The Glance It?

Good to have confirmation of health benefits

Increase in injury to cyclists - caused by greater number cycling or as studies often London based - aggro?

I am on holiday in Bromley. South east London. Was at William Morris house today then cycled up to Darwin’s House at Downe. Then beyond to the north Downs way. Probably steepest hill I have ever gone up, short but incredibly steep. And finally crossed the Downs Way.

Hey Gembo you are in the wrong thread.

I don’t think so Kimosabe, all of this route, maybe a hilly 20km is in the Greater London Low Emission Zone, also Bromley is maybe 13km south east of London Town Centre.

The plan is to eventually have a low emission zone in every urban area with a population greater than 150,000 people

Labour is also expected to win Boris Johnson’s old seat of Uxbridge and South Ruislip in west London, but officials report that the Tories are having some success in focusing voters’ concerns on London mayor Sadiq Khan’s plans to expand the capital’s ultra-low emission zone.

It can’t be easy being Barbie. As if life wasn’t tough enough for an ageing doll with a decorative dimwit for a boyfriend, this week she suffered the indignity of being dragged into a byelection.

Or more precisely, her bright pink classic Corvette did. In easily the most excruciating moment of an already awkward attempt to cling on to Boris Johnson’s old Uxbridge seat, Tory HQ briefly tried to enliven its main line of attack by suggesting to friendly newspapers that if Barbie for some unexplained reason rocked up in the suburbs, she might have to pay £12.50 for breaching mayor Sadiq Khan’s ultra-low emission zone (Ulez), due to be extended to the capital’s outer fringes from August. At the time of writing, the voters’ verdict on this one is still hotly awaited. But whatever the outcome, hiding behind a dolly feels like the kind of political low point nobody gets over in a hurry.

Jeezo, a massive swing in a previously safe seat that they ultimately failed to win by less than 500 votes(on a 46% turnout mind), and the Tony Blair Tribute Band are already out briefing the press that Khan needs to "rethink" the ULEZ expansion and "listen to the voters".

Who needs Tories when you have Kier & Co.

If the Labour party start going full on fossil fuel funny then the next election could be closer than anyone currently expects. Perhaps in this corner of London they want to be free to kill children but nationwide the moode is slowly swinging.

Before 6a.m the traffic is ok in London but after that it is intense everywhere even in a semi rural area like Uxbridge.

10 million people all seeking to move at the same time.

Every train also packed and every tube rammed.

I was on a TfL bus from Victoria station recently that was fine. And I walked from William Morris’s house in bexleyheath round to shops for water and the back roads were not too busy.

Otherwise it is total Carmageddon. The driving is also ultra aggressive.

Going car free in London will be harder than it is here but still possible. The transport system is good it is just the number of people using it.

Cycling infrastructure is good in places.

ULEZ was weaponised here in the by election for sure. Same as Lib Dems are doing in Corstorphine.

I hope Sadiq Khan holds his nerve. A better scrappage scheme might help.?

“If the Labour party start going full on fossil fuel”

Anything seems possible under Starmer at the moment.

Is Miliband self-isolating or locked up somewhere?

Starmer has been ‘clear’ that he won’t (promise to) spend money the UK doesn’t have. For a ‘just transition’, money is required for vehicle scrapage, wind farms, heat pumps, battery factories etc.

Somehow it’s expected that ‘the government’ will pay/subsidise! So more taxes on the ‘hard working poor’ (or whatever this week’s key demographic is labelled).

Perhaps ‘the market’ will realise some existing industries aren’t going to continue to turn a profit sooner than the politicians(?)

“Perhaps in this corner of London they want to be free to kill children”

Well detailed analysis (if it ever happens) of this by-election will be very interesting. It’s being suggested that in the area only about 10% of vehicles aren’t ULEZ compliant. Presume 20% or so of voters don’t have cars.

So who were all these people indignant about things that didn’t affect them??

Obviously whatever the rights/wrongs/local difficulties of ULEZ, the Conservatives won’t be able to find a local grievance issue for every constituency in time for the GE.

So Lab should hold it’s nerve, point out that LEZs in London were brought in by Boris, demand a better scrapage scheme (to help Tories meet their net zero targets…) and generally propose going further/faster with less subsidy OR more contribution from all polluters…

“but nationwide the mood is slowly swinging”

Remains to be seen how ‘firm’ that is in the fact of constant onslaught from most newspapers.

Lab should be more scared of climate change than they are of the media.

Perhaps the voters already are and want to vote for parties that have some constructive policies.

    @gembo:

It used to amaze me when people complained about "the traffic" when I moved up to Edinburgh from London in the late 1990s. I used to think that, if they thought this was bad, they should see what it's like where I used to live.

I think the traffic in London is actually somewhat better than it was back then - or perhaps the rate of increase in awfulness has just declined somewhat from the trajectory it was on when I left. Probably thanks to things like the congestion charge and LEZs, but it seems many folks would rather complain about the 'inconvenience' those cause than looking at the actual benefits, especially if they don't perceive those benefits as accruing to them. Of course those perceived inconveniences often come down to little more than having to modify ones daily habits a bit, rather than completely overhauling the way you live (see also: people who moan about sorting their recycling, or who simply refuse to do it).

Too many people seem to object to any kind of change by default, rather than pausing to consider the wider pros and cons.

I actually have great sympathy for recycling-moaners, given how much of their carefully sorted garbage ends up going right off to landfill anyway.

We walked through London recently, Kings X to the Strand. A lot of low traffic neighbourhoods, traffic seemed very light once away from the main roads

Back here, was cycling today behind a non-LEZ compliant taxi (Euro 5 diesel, 64 plate) - I’d thought they’d all be gone by now?!

If I'm understanding this document correctly, then they're allowed to carry on driving it until the taxi license expires.

"Separately to this requirement, any Euro 5 Taxi or PHC that has passed its test and is licensed prior to 1 April 2022 may continue to be operated until its licence expires"

I'd've assumed that licenses were renewed annually, but it could be longer?

Other local authorities are likely to be laxer as well, so non-compliant taxis perhaps likely until enforcement begins in June.

Having just returned from the Netherlands, I can’t help but bitterly laugh at the gutlessness of purportedly Left Wing politicians at home when it comes to reducing emissions, improving air quality, and keeping kids safe.
