At least four Edinburgh Conservative councillors were in attendance last night at the public meeting organised by conspiracy theorists Together.
Notionally a “debate” about LEZs, LTNs, 15 minute neighbourhoods etc, in reality it was a carnival of climate change denial, claims about people being locked in their homes, digital control and all sorts of other craziness.
I wonder what they thought when they heard speakers say that 9/11 through to Covid were government planned or that the council intended to introduce facial ID to stop people leaving their assigned zone?
Would they have attended a meeting organised by David Icke?

So which councillors were there?
I think I recognised Whyte, Cowdy, Mowat and Marie-Claire Munro from a grainy image of the audience

I saw Whyte & Mowat; someone else spotted Cowdy. I confess I wouldn’t recognise Munro.

Gotta Get A Grip is a kaleidoscopic diatribe about a political culture led by “lunatics and clowns” who are content for a public fed “fake news” and “policy shams”

@Stickman - I reckon they have simply learned the lessons of Trump and Johnson. You can co-opt the crazies without putting off too much of the centre ground. It's usually done with a nod and a wink and a "they raise some legitimate concerns", rather than full throated support.
Attendance at these meetings can be justified with a "I went to hear the concerns of my constituents" and "I may not agree with everything I heard...but they raise some legitimate points".
Make no mistake though - Edinburgh Tories are now quite happy to quietly court the nutcase vote. A strategy, I suspect, that will work far more effectively than many expect...until it really, really doesn't. (Say a prospective candidate recorded agreeing with some insane conspiracy theory).

@Morningsider: like this?
Posted 1 year ago # -
Sort of - I didn't think the candidate would be the one recoding and publicising their own hateful views.
Two things about that article raise a smile. The first is the paper are happy to call "looking at a twitter account" an "investigation". The second is imagining the due diligence carried out by the local tory party:
Party functionary: "Are you a racist?"
Candidate: "Me? No! I love p@*£!$ and n!@@£)&"
Party functionary: "Good chap, you're in!"

Thank you to everyone who responded to our survey on the Corstorphine Low Traffic Neighbourhood (LTN). We received over 1000 responses, most of whom live in the affected streets or in nearby areas.
It is clear that the changes to streets in the Featherhall/Manse area are deeply unpopular, with over 65% of people strongly opposed to most of the measures. We have been calling on the Labour administration to listen to what our community wants.
This is particularly vital with the Manse Road bus gate, which has caused a huge amount of confusion due to poor signage and contradictory road markings.
Local Lib Dem councillor Euan Davidson said, "We have written to the Transport and Environment Convenor, calling on him to take these findings seriously and respond to the legitimate concerns.
"The council have to listen to our community."Shameless brassneck from the LibDems. Kevin Lang praised the quality of consultation and changes made in response to it, and voted for the bus gate on Manse Road.

SO
I wonder if people are concerned about change or implementation or just everything on principle??!

I'd like to think that if I lived there I'd support it, but based on a few quick detour visits I can see how the "LTN" might not deliver much benefit to people in the area on the whole. So if one was local, you'd know that a bunch of people are apparently very upset and you're not really seeing much benefit, and you could end up opposed (even if you're fine with the principles of LTNs in general).
I remain completely mystified about why the council decided to go into Corstorphine of all places, just a stone's throw from where the lib dems / East Craigs NIMBYs bled the last administration dry. I'm no political strategist, but it just seems like stumbling from one garden rake to another.

(For what it's worth, my prediction is that Scott Arthur will fold and the LTN will be ripped out, and after a second huge defeat there won't be any further efforts to deliver LTNs anywhere in the city, at least until the next administration.. you heard it here first)

For those in the constituency, the response to the Tory win has not been greeted kindly. “It’s rubbish. The anti-Ulez candidates who stood only got 400 votes. They used it as an excuse against Sadiq Khan and the Labour party,” said Laurence, who owns a Ulez-compliant Mercedes and voted for Labour in last Thursday’s byelection.
He voted for the Liberal Democrats in the 2019 general election. The Tories have “gone all Trumpist. They’re desperate,” he said.

“Our analysis presents strong evidence that increasing levels of air pollution are associated with increased risk of antibiotic resistance,” researchers from China and the UK wrote. “This analysis is the first to show how air pollution affects antibiotic resistance globally.” Their findings are published in the Lancet Planetary Health journal.

Received a nice "Easter Egg" in the post :(
Our Irish holiday house swap visitors inadvertently drove our car in the Manse Rd bus gate during the stay, just 6 minutes inside the time limit.

Interesting, did they think it was outside the time, or just not understand the signage?

A spokesman for Glasgow City Council said: “It’s not credible to claim the LEZ had this impact on business when it didn’t actually come into force until after the 12-month period of research that’s been highlighted.

I don't know, haven't spoken to them. Perhaps in holiday mode. Photo on the PCN is quite clear.Posted 1 year ago # -

I genuinely think if he gets in, one day "Keir Starmer Kid Harmer" will be a refrain as common as "Maggie Thatcher Milk Snatcher" once was. The man could score an own-goal while playing keepie uppies.

Glasgow's controversial low emission zone (LEZ) is helping fuel the increase in the rat population in the city centre, it has been claimed. Union GMB Scotland says many refuse vehicles fail to comply with the strict LEZ rules, keeping them out of the busiest areas in the city
