This gate is locked at the Crossgatehall end while resurfacing work is done. A notice says the path is still open but you would have to lift your bike over the gate.

I thought I read they were maintaining access throughout the works... perhaps only if you're capable of lifting a bike over your head.

Anyhow I forgot to add to this post that the new gate which was installed as a result of the cattle escape had been removed.

Anyone know if the gate at Crossgatehall end is still locked?

I'd guess it almost certainly is. They were less than half way through the piles of surfacing material last week. I had to go round by Cousland and rejoin the path at Ormiston.

I'm there now and it is still locked. Road closed sign now too.

Having said that two cyclists have just gone around the gate to the side and joined the path. So who knows.

Tried it anyway, heading west. Got to about Elphinstone, where I met a Road Closed sign. Went on anyway, but the surface became unsuitable for a road bike, so I had to turn round come back via Elphinstone

The resurfacing work seems to be finished. The car park is open again and it and the path (as far as the Elphinston connection) are now surfaced with very smooth red blaes (though these surfaces now go by different names, I think).

    “very smooth red blaes”

Mmm, hope drainage has been sorted in places it used to flood.

    "Red blaes"

My knees just squirmed at the memory of falling over on that stuff as a kid.

  11. Ah, memories. Dalkeith High's sports ground at the back of the school was red blaes. You never wanted to get too energetic at sports for fear of a fall on that stuff.

We were handed Dettol and a wire brush back in my hockey days.

    Luxury. We had gravel.
