Cyclist down on Gogar Station Road at ~0750 this morning, on the bridge over the M8. Several vehicles had stopped, he was being cared for and he appeared to be conscious. An ambulance passed me a few minutes later. Wishing him a speedy recovery.

I didn't witness the incident, so I'm not going to speculate on the cause, but it's not the bit of Gogar Station Road where I would have expected anything to happen.

The cyclist was rescued by a work colleague, who has described the cause of the incident. The cyclist was coming down the shared-use pavement on GSR when they hit some fence panels that had been dumped overnight. The bicycle is severely damaged (snapped fork blade, buckled wheel) and the cyclist is 'a bit battered'.

    @Greenroofer

At the peril to my good standing in your place of work I always aimed to be in for 09h30 simply to avoid the canal and GSR downhill in the dark.

Also for that reason 500 lumen MTB front light on way home. It is a jungle out there.

All too common. Whole caravan once.

No excuse for fly tipping- apart from anti-social lazy cheapskateness.

Hope no ‘otherwise law abiding’ garden owners think it’s a good idea -

Yikes. Busy road potentially safer than shared-use pavement?

It's an oft-overlooked benefit to us that cars grind rubbish into dust.

Or that no one would have tipped that stuff there were it a road that other drivers might be injured using.

Though the glass crushing thing is handy.

@IWRATS just so long as cars don't consider cyclists to be rubbish.

It may be if using a light in winter cannot see far enough away to stop. I was thinking this last night as cycled home if was a rock or a new pot hole that had appeared during the day may not notice it in time with my 300 lumens . I may order one of those 1000 lumen cheap lights of amazon.

@HankChief - that suggests your colleague might have a case for compensation from the council (or the landowner if not the council).

I was running this morning with a very bright head torch on and didn’t see the pile of fence panels until I was nearly on top of them so can imagine there would be very little time to react for anyone on a bike who would be going much faster than me! They were before the flyover and it was pitch dark, not to mention they also took up most of the pavement leaving little chance of not ending up in the road even if you did avoid them.

He was very lucky not to have been hit by a car after being flung in to the road. Here’s to a speedy recovery.

Is the obstruction still in a dangerous position?

I may be passing on my way home tonight.

    Thanks for the offer Biketrain.

The fence panels have been moved to behind the crash barriers, so no need.

"I'm alive thanks. Busted collarbone, finger & thumb, strained muscles & roadrash. Upped to 1600 lumens to burn out the retina of flytipper!"

    Twitter has added X-ray

Yes folks, I am alive. I've sent police back to check the wood, in remote hope the idiot can be traced by it. Bit sorer today, but just glad Donald and his taxi weren't 2 seconds earlier, otherwise ... doesnt bare thinking about.

But for every idiot (like the tipper, and the wifey that tutted as she squeezed her car passed my gurney) there's angels everywhere. The six that stopped to help, the three in the ambulance, and the eight in A&E, and you crusaders here. People are great.

Anyway, what painkiller recommendations will I flaunt next.

Ouch, glad you're up to posting!

Cocodamol and a big glass of red wine is nice? NB: I am not a doctor, this is not medically sound advice.

    @balernodave

    Welcome to CCE

Sorry about the circumstances, stick around, you’ll like it.

Feel free to start a new thread (anytime you like).

We used to have ‘too many’ Daves, but a few have gone quiet.

There are others, invisible, biding their time.

Original Dave now lives in nearby suburban area to Balerno. There is also medium Dave and DaveC.

Might be more daves but no David?

Good we have Balerno Dave with us given the sabotage

This bit of advice I got for attending my first PY was to call everyone Dave as you were right more often than you were wrong.

New Dave - Glad to hear you can take the positives out of the situation.

The fence panels were still just over the crash barrier tonight, but I couldn't see anything traceable on them.

CEC did send a team to pick them up but couldn't find them...

Before or after they were moved?

After. I think they were looking for them on the cyclepath after my tweet with a picture of them blocking it.

Although, as noted above they were already told about it on Tuesday night :-(

Flytipping does happen infrequently on GSR but usually in the field entrance on the opposite side of road

They were certainly still there at 5.30 this evening.

Perhaps we should deliver them to City Chambers?
