    "Bike racks on Princes St."

Nah, you're not getting them - 'spoils the streetscape'.

Though - there's supposed to be adequate bike parking at tram stops...

    spoils the streetscape

it's all subjective. I happen to think that Tartan Tat merchants broadcasting the theme from Last of the Mohicans on panpipes spoils the streetscape whereas I think some nice bicycles on a rack does nothing but add to it! :)

"...there's supposed to be adequate bike parking at tram stops..."

Based, presumably, on estimates of the proportion of tram users who will be cyclists? Sounds like the cooncil are forgetting (along with everyone else, which is reasonable, given its high incredulosity factor) that there'll only be the one tram stop on PS. There'll always be the electrification-wire support towers, if your locks are wide enough.

Seemingly-deliberate anti-cyclist streetscaping and road hazards, in all their preventable forms?

    A little OT, but:
I don't see the problem with one tram stop on Princes St. It's slap-bang in the middle, and there'll be a stop at St Andrews Sq and one in Shandwick Pl. Midway between the Mound and Shadwick Pl is what? 500m? Something like 6 minutes' walk. Has everyone lost use of their legs?

    Perhaps not on this forum..

I imagine there would be fewer bus stops along Princes Street if the shopping/bussing populace regarded a 6' walk as trivial. Apart from anything else a single stop will incur much greater loading/unloading delays, given the apparent inability of some people to form an orderly mob.

The frequency of bus stops on Princes St does irritate me at times, but I suspect that is something to do with the sheer number of buses on Princes St as opposed to the number of times each bus actually stops.

The reduced number of decelerations, stops and accelerations caused by having just one stop should make up for any time lost to general passenger faff. But then the trams will have several exits and no queuing to pay the driver (tickets purchased before boarding) which should speed up boarding relative to buses.

Quality Bike Corridor [QBC] - set to run and run!!

    FUTURE OF DICK VET SITE

On a quite separate matter, there is a public consultation exhibition on the future of this massive site
Tues 7 Dec, 1-7pm, and Wed 8 Dec, 2-8pm at the Dick Vet, Summerhall Place.

The whole site is to be sold off by Edinburgh University, and consultants GVA Grimley have been appointed to come up with possible future uses and layouts. Their work is at an early stage, so this is a consultation on development principles and options rather than on a specific detailed plan. The exhibition will be staffed by the consultants. If you go along please do complete the questionnaire which will be provided.

This is a huge site in a highly populated area close to shopping and many amenities - car parking should be as low as possible, with incentives for new residents and workers to walk, cycle and (if they need car access) join the car club.

How about also including a 'bike hub' on the ground floor - combining repairs, secure allday £1 parking, bike hire etc?[u]

If you cannot attend and wish to submit comments, or have any questions, contact robert.newton@gvagrimley.co.uk.

If you have any interesting ideas, please also pass them on to Spokes so we can consider them for our own response.

The frequency of bus stops on Princes St

The problem stems from nearly every bus route in Edinburgh being routed through Princes St. There are so many, they can't all share the same stops, hence the staggered arrangement, where buses for certain destination areas all depart from one stand, those for another area at the adjacent stand etc. Hence each "stop" actually gets 3 or 4 different stands. Bl**dy annoying when you want to go to Corstorphine and an X48 comes along but you're waiting at the 12/26/31 stop and have to do a bit of running.
