  1. Yip, by the time I got through the tunnel this morning everything was decidedly diifcult to shift... I swear yesterday morning the fluid in my front brake was freezing...

  2. The rumble strips on George Street have been worn down a bit. Basically yesterday these had very definite edges, more or less the width of a very wide tyre, and the little crests running horizontally had sharp tops!

Just frozen bus treads I think. I have seen plenty of slushy ones so I guess they just freeze like that.

  5. Probably, it was just the fact that they were pointy was odd. But I guess George Street has slightly less traffic, so less chance of getting them smoothed off as quickly...

Having thought more about it, I think the ice rumble strips are created by snow dripping off vehicles onto the road and then freezing. The ripples are probably natural, in the same way that wind and water create ripples in sand. They ought to be more common near traffic lights and places where vehicles tend to queue, and the lateral spacing would be consistent with tyres and wheelarches.

I've got a good photo that I'll upload later. My theory now is that car gets to lights - stops - slush accumulated in wheel arch drops down - Car moves on.

"also have a (rather expensive) season ticket for my rail commute, it's been useless for over a week now but I bet I don't qualify for any sort of rebate"

    "
please wait til your ticket expires then send to CR (address on website) with list of dates you couldn't travel, thanks.

Ahh but they'll say they had a service it was just restricted and that my bicycle not getting on is not covered :-(
Thanks for the suggestion though. :-/

    "Thanks for the suggestion though"

    I think you should try.

As a season ticket holder there must be some degree of assumption that you need trains at regular times each day - which certainly hasn't been the case.

"As a season ticket holder there must be some degree of assumption that you need trains at regular times each day..."

All the blurb which comes in the post with the cooncil's zone parking permits highlights the fact that the permit does indeed buy you permission to park in the marked areas in that particular zone but by no means guarantees a space, nor ensures sufficient space for all permit holders to park simultaneously. I'm sure train operators have similar get-outs somewhere in their Ts and Cs...

"'m sure train operators have similar get-outs somewhere in their Ts and Cs..."

Yes, but given the past couple of weeks perhaps SR will not try to hide behind the 'we managed to run some trains so we're no' payin'"

Especially when the info provided by its own website, Twitter feed and National Rail was completely unreliable.

Train cos are regulated and have some defined rules to follow as well - this sort of thing has happened before, so I'm sure there will be established guidelines.

"I'm sure there will be established guidelines"

I suppose it depends on the perceived PR dis/benefits of being too generous/stingy.

And whether the shareholders think that keeping the customers vaguely happy is worth the minor dent in profits...

  15. Dammit, my pristine not-falling-off record in this spell has come to an end. Side street that yesterday was compacted snow with bags of traction turned out today to be slick ice. With ruts. Ergo I took my turn at proving the theory of gravity. Pah.

Do you watch Reporting Scotland expecting serious news?

I just watch it for laughs to see how bad it can be.

    If you say so.

Very interesting though - esp. contrast with slush free road.

    -3℃ in Airdrie.

Glasgow council say teachers have to report to empty schools so I'll trundle along there in half an hour or so.

I'm instructed to hug a car for someone who left it there on Monday. I'll send her a photo. I'll water my peanuts. Might have some coffee.

Pick up milk on the way home.

Definite thaw on in Bellevue - lots of bits of snow/ice falling off the trees and dripping off rooves/roofs.

There are some spectacular, I'd say metre-long, icicles hanging off guttering on Dublin Street. I wouldn't recommend lingering on some of the doorsteps there...

  29. +2 when I left the house. Yay!

Wee Folding Bike, I've never understood the 'report to an empty school' thing (my ex was a teacher and it baffled way back then).

"I've never understood the 'report to an empty school' thing (my ex was a teacher and it baffled way back then)."

It's to prove you're fit for work.

Oh but if you're not, you could 'phone in sick...

It's to show that teachers are important and that their journeys to 'show their faces' are "essential"!!
