Last week there was the snow and one night of spectacular cold -

This week might get off to a cold daytime start if the wind gets up -

Anth says - "Planning on MTBing the Innocent tomorrow - if it has gone the way of some of the medium use paths round here it should be pretty hard packed fun.

Roads could be interesting - I predict sudden ice patches based on a wee walk outside just now to find little patches forming on the path I cleared earlier today already."

    Be careful out there.

Brrrr! Although a 13mph wind causing a 14 degree "actual" vs. "feels like" temperature difference might have to be taken with a pinch of salt (I hope!)

Well, I won't have to worry about the rones on my house, they have fallen off both front and back!! I will just have to hope that the rest of the roof stays on...

Anyone know what the path to D'Mains from Roseburn is like at the moment? Need to head out that way tomorrow and kind decide if I should stick to the roads or not.

I was out hill walking last weekend in -25 wind chill. It was cold (and very difficult to stay upright!)

    Be extra careful...

Meaning "as if the weather and road surface isn't bad enough, now there's the school run to contend with"?

    "Meaning..."

    As the council says -

    "
Edinburgh_CC: The only situation where nursery is open and school isn't is at Clovenstone. Apart from that, primary closed = nursery closed.

I am missing my bike so much!

I did see a couple of folk on bikes today - one with shorts on!!!! and the other with a puncture.

Coming in by bus from Eskbank isn't such fun - the 3's are not as frequent as normal (i.e. more than 30 min intervals instead of 10) plus there seems to be loads of of cars today, making walking (and bussing) unpleasant. And the pavements .... It seems that the system (as always) is weighted towards unneccesary CO2 emissions.

On the positive side, there is a prediction of warmer weather coming towards the end of the week. At which point the gutters will be ripped off my house and the devastation in the garden will become more apparent.

    "Well they got that wrong!"

Not necessarily - how is it further out?

But, certainly it seems heavier than 'forecast'!

Well rode in today, i set off before it started snowing so the bike may end up stranded in the office if it doesn't let off.

The huge queue at the bus stop and helping some dude dig his car out confirmed my opinion that i was better on the bike if it wasn't actively snowing, then it started actively snowing....

  17. Started just five minutes before I went out. Great ride along the Innocent - rideable surface, with just enough interest to make sure you still have to concentrate quite a lot.

The roads were ridiculous. Combination of schools back plus everyone thinking the weather was getting better so it was fine to drive again meant absolute gridlock. But not for me! Wahey! Probably ride home the same route.

Three separate ambulances with blues and twos going at different points of the ride. One of two things I'd be willing to put money on being the cause - pedestrian falls on the still criminally slippery pavements; drivers driving as normal thinking the conditions were better.

    The roads were ridiculous.

As they were for me, trying to cycle to work about 08.45. Everyone round my way (including me, who did three and a half hours non-stop) spent the weekend shovelling snow to clear the road, and all of a sudden it's car drivin' time again. And then, hurrah!, it snows again, and everyone suddenly goes tootle tootle tootle.

It's quite incredibly cold being snowed and iced into the face whilst at a standstill in traffic. I had to keep jumping off the bike and take to the pavement because it was faster and warmer than waiting in line. A lot of people at my work drove today, and are now worrying.

Cycled in, slippy damn cobbles. Didn't fall Friday or today but was like Babmie on ice in places namely Hill St.
My glasses either steamed up or got covered in snow so had to ditch them for visibility which was difficult as some snow got in the eyes, however the nifty wee visor on my h***** kept a lot out...
Buying Yak Trax now as they're cheaper and lighter than the Pogu spikes so more suitable for my mum and mum-in-law

Well that was the antithesis of fun. Traffic out of town backed up from Gogar Rounbdabout (and beyond up the Bypass and A8) all the way back into at least Roseburn. There's not really anywhere to filter a lot of the time, so sometimes bit my lip and wen't down the middle of the road, othertimes took my chances and slithered around where the bus lane should have been.

Wet, sleety snow that collected on any surface and refused to dislodge, yet melted enough to get your clothing wet and make it seem colder than it was last week. Had to remove my glasses as they had gon opaque. My eyesight's pretty poor but I was at least able to make out the road infront of me when I wasn't screwing my eyes up because there was sleet in them. Wind seemed to be blowing it directly into my face regardless of what direction it was coming from. When I could see the speedo I wasn't able to get above about 10mph before the snow in my face got too much, but I was still making much better progress than cars.

Took me about 1h20m to do what normally takes 25m. I spent most of that wishing I'd worn a warmer hat than the merino baabaa hat which is normalyl reserved for under the helmet. And to think I was going to dispose of the windproof gilet too but thought better than that on the way out the door!

Walked again today. Seemed to be a combination of fluffy dusting atop re-frozen slush and fluffy dusting atop non-re-frozen slush on heavier-use roads. The fluffy dusting reminded me slightly of wax chain lubricant.

What do you do when the traffic is gridlocked??

I was looking at the Greeener Leith site's coverage of the path upgrade down there which will begin in February and someone in the comments had linked to this odd way of prepping a bike for snow use:

    http://www.dutchbikeco.com/_blog/Dutch_Bike_Co_Weblog/post/Seattle_Snowpocalypse/

Apologies if it's already been mentioned.

@cyclingmollie - a few people have mentioned that method, but that's the first pictures of it I've seen. All my bikes use rim brakes, otherwise I'd be sorely tempted to try it out!

Hah - I inhaled snow and hail this year, thankfully the wee under h***** skull cap thing to cover my ears means I won't get any in my ear as I turn my head to check behind me this year...

  27. Lots of people looking like leaving early from here - I may join then and head home about 1ish - apparently the roads are becoming absolutely dreadful - so I'll definitely be heading for some more fun down the Innocent!
