Another week of 'weather'

There seems to be some indication that last week's weather was just a taste of what's still to come.

Met Office 6 to 15 day forecast mentions "significant accumulations" of snow and "cold or very cold" temeratures. Also, "risk of gales in eastern parts".

  2. Hmmm, have to admit that even I (as a champion of the snow) am beginning to think it would be nice to have a wee break from it. Doesn't look likely with that forecast!

Innocent today was starting to get harder and icier and today might be my last day riding it in a while - road bike on the main roads from Monday I think (bus tomorrow for various reasons). There's a definite 'slope' to the hard packed bits of the Innocent in places that sees you drifting to the soft stuff at the side, and a couple of bits that are just pure ice. If it stays cold then I think last year's non-treatment record could be broken, and I expect there will still be significant amounts of ice on that path into the New Year.

Then again, meeting Mel to walk home with her (basically riding to the top of Leith Walk then walking to Duddingston) the paths haven't seen any attention either. WHERE ARE THE MINI-TRACTORS????

"last week's weather was just a taste of what's still to come".

That's fine - it's all part of the 'learning curve'

'We' will all have spiked tyres and/or 'shoe claws'.

    Cars will have snow tyres.

Motorways will shut until the ploughs/gritters have passed through.

ScotRail will keep its trains indoors at night.

And/or everyone will be told to stay at home.

When I looked at my weather widget this morning and it said "1C" I almost felt like celebrating the return of summer. The I realised that actually, there's still another 2-3 odd months of this to come :(

It's odd, I grew up in Edinburgh int he 80s/90s and longed for winters like these last 2, but they never came. It rarely snowed, when it did it only lasted a few days and the temperature rarely stayed below zero for a couple of days on end. Now we've had them, I don't like them, and I wan't the old days back!

Judging by the small JCB needed to clear the hard pack ice on the pavement (Semple Street) just now and how long it took to do a metre i think it might be a while before they get to the bike paths and lesser used pavements.

Parking tickets for cars blocking Edinburgh roads

    Hurrah!

An Edinburgh City Council spokesman said they did not have the powers to issue tickets under the parking regulation order because motorists were unable to see yellow lines covered in snow and ice.

A Lothian and Borders Police spokesman said they do have powers to issue parking tickets where cars are blocking roads or causing traffic congestion.

I got a good shot of a grey van parked on the Mound today (not abandoned, it was clear of snow), during rush hour, infront of the bus stop and across the (remains of the) cycle lane. I usually obscure car number plates before putting them on flickr, but I'm tempted not too for this clown.

Anyone seen any squaddies on the streets yet shovelling snow with their bayonets? UPDATE - according to the BBC they're clearing Astley Ainslie hostipal and care homes.

In other news (and afraid I can't do a screenshot from here), Metcheck 14-day lookahead predicting heavy snow and strong winds in run up to Christmas

    GOOD

I wasn't sure if there had been a tacit or explicit suspension of parking restrictions.

    RAIL UPDATE...

Not much moving it seems as on 8/12/10.
There are about 30 line problems. When you click and read you find that servces are cancelled or suspended.

Line problem between Any Scottish Station and Any other Scottish Station.
Train services between Any Scottish Station and any other Scottish Station are being disrupted due to poor weather conditions.
Short notice cancellations can be expected.
Please note that until further notice, Many Scottish Station to/from Many other Scottish Station services are withdrawn. Passengers are advised to make their own alternative transport arrangements as there is no replacement transport available.

That's better.... you get the picture!

It's still just one big list of cancelled services.

"It's still just one big list of cancelled services."

Yes - did you notice 'update' posting times?

At about 8 this morning most were 10 or more hours old. "disrupted due to poor weather conditions" isn't what I call useful info.

"it's a knock-on effect causing things like frozen points, track defects, mechanical faults, brake problems, safety issues etc."

    etc....

    kaputnik,

I don't think there is any requirement to blur the licence plates. Bristol Traffic makes a point of mentioning the numbers so they turn up in a Google search if someone wants to sell the vehicle.

The AA has the best cleared roads in Edinburgh as I mentioned on the big long weather thread last week, so I think the squaddies would be better off spending their time somewhere else.

There seems to be some kind of system of hot pipes running under some of the roadways and paths in the AA. Not sure if it's the hospital heating system, or hot water system or something else. Probably a bit inefficient but it does keep the snow and ice at bay. You can even see grass in places. Grass - you remember? That green stuff that lives on the ground.

Suspect all three - there's a hydrotherapy pool too.

Burst pipe in school today. It didn't matter too much as there have been no kids since Monday morning.

I was in school as usual and potted on some my peanuts.

They are growing on much better than I expected.

Wherever the squaddies get misused you can bet you wont see bayonets, in our very sensitive country they are not allowed to carry their rifles in public (except for ceremonial duties) in case they scare members of the public (really!).
Oh and they only get to have bayonets fixed in a city if they've got official "freedom" of the city. Strange world we live in...

Still think it would be more efficient to get more mini-ploughs/mini plough drivers and actually get the council clearing important areas rather than misusing squaddies as (very expensive) labourers :-/

"misusing squaddies as (very expensive) labourers"

Jenny Dawe was on the radio earlier.

Didn't know how many or how much it would cost.

Saw them clearing out around Sick Kids c. 12.30 - presumed it was the boiler we'd heard about on R4 this am, but the medic we saw was complaining about lack of parking too....

Well I'll wager it's not the usual announcement when you're at Platform 1 and then they tell you with a minute to departure that actually it's changed to platform 21, so you better run for it

This is what the army have done:

Cluny Drive - cleared by the squaddies

Cleared Cluny Place to provide access to the AA Boiler House.

The residents here must be feeling special.

let's hope they've done my route to work. It seems my touring bike's back wheel is out of commission, therefore I'll be on my old road bike with x23 slicks...

I've taken the sensible precaution of swapping LOOK pedals for SPDs. Apart from that, I'm doomed.

    Avenge my death.
