@Kaputnik, cool, that makes sense, it may even be a harmonic of the main KFM signal that's interfering with your "proper" wireless station reception.. they probably run stupid power outputs :-/
Let us know if the extended antenna thing helps btw, the main rule with signal reception is the more wire in the sky the better (until the strength of signal overpowers your receivers ability to cope!)

A good design is also very useful, (almost a requirement for transmitting (but not quite!)), but for receive just a simple more is better is a good start with arials :)

Had assumed that dab time was equally 'suspect'

My computer and phone never say the same time, so it's always hard to know! (Not that a few seconds make that much difference!)

The dab time is broadcast slightly separately to the content so shouldn't be nearly so laggy.

If you really cared, you could sync your computer with a known good ntp server and sync your iphone with either the same server or for an experiment sync it with the gps (there will be an app for that ;)) they should be almost exactly the same and the margin would be milliseconds if that.

Computers aren't actually very good at keeping time for various reasons they slip and need to be synced ever couple of days if to the second accuracy is necessary and not just being overly geeky like me.

I can't believe that I missed James Naughtie calling Jeremy Hunt something else that rhymes with his surname because of silly Kingdom FM :(

@SRD, bet you can't get it from here on your xtal set! ;-)
I only ever had onve xtal set that worked, and I built that as a grown up... obviously a failed geek lol. I was always rubbish at electronics (and still am!) so the new multiple guess radio licence system was a bonus for me :-)

QI (for me at least), my first successful transatlantic radio communication was with a station in Canada (Newfoundland, callsign VO1MP http://www.qrz.com/db/ )

    @kaputnik

Well it looks a bit like an alarm clock.

The watchers should be a bit more alarmed at that level of radioactivity!

Smudge - neato! Nfld a good place for picking up radio transmissions..... we used to get weird stuff just on the car radio if we were up high enough.

Asmara - where we lived last - also very good (as the US discovered to the region's detriment). Physicist colleague of mine said it was to do with the atmospheric conditions, but never figured out why or what it was that made it so special.

kaputnik -- I thought I heard that (on my digital radio :) but decided I had imagined it over wails of babe etc. Funny!

It was classic Today moment. These are usually detectable by the fact that Jim Naughtie tries to cover up his obvious corpsing/hysterical laughter while he reads the next bit of the script by coughing.

For a few seconds after he did it there was silence - either stunned silence or silent in-studio ROFLing. I thought for a moment they'd been taken off the air and feared the nuclear subs might unleash their arsenal as a result.

Well I have heard that it is not just Radio 4 but the Today Programme specifically so we are quite lucky to have avoided nuclear armageddon I'd say.

My watch sets itself around 0200 hrs every day. It does the DST change automatically too but I might have to change that if Westminster votes on UTC+1 all year.

I hate to intrude with some facts but...
from the BBC Transmitter information site:
    Transmitter Channel Effect When
Black Hill Radio 1 FM Weak Signal from 13:01 on 03 Dec
Black Hill Radio 2 FM Weak Signal from 13:01 on 03 Dec
Black Hill Radio 3 FM Weak Signal from 13:01 on 03 Dec
Black Hill Radio 4 FM Weak Signal from 04:05 today
Black Hill Radio 4 FM Off Air from 02:46 today to 04:05 today
Black Hill Radio 4 FM Weak Signal from 13:01 on 03 Dec to 02:46 today
Black Hill Radio nan Gaidheal FM Weak Signal from 13:01 on 03 Dec
Black Hill Radio Scotland FM Weak Signal from 13:01 on 03 Dec
No reason given but I imagine the weather at Black Hill isn't the best it's been.

Thanks alibali, with Smudge's input that explains it all then. Black Hill transmitting weakly or not at all (I also noticed Radio Scotland was hard to pick up, and Radio 3 as well, all of which come from Black Hill - which was making it hard to work out where Radio 4 "should" be on the dial), therefore Kingdom FM overpowering it.

As for Mr. Naughty, I hope it's on youtube or something similar to listen again. And again. And again...

    Facts are always goood ;-)
Nice to time weak signal to go with heavy snowfall, almost guaranteed poor reception :-/

Update: Just checked, Radios 1,3 and 4 fine here above Falkirk, Radio 2 poor reception (on internal antenna)
So with a decent antenna/receiver you should still be able to hear it in Edinburgh just now :)

We'd been thinking of making panetone. anyone got a recipe? i have a US measure one from the Joy of Cooking but giorgio locatelli spends two pages talking about panetone w/out giving a recipe!

R4 is back. As strong as ever. I've not tried kamut flour I usually use half and half strong whole grain and strong white.

SRD I've got some recipes for panetone but I've not tried them so I can't really vouch for them.

Spelt flour is where it's at. One-third spelt to two-thirds white gets a nice texture and flavour.

However, I tend to just mix up whatever flour I've got.

there was a parsnip loaf in the guardian recently that called for spelt flour. was thinking of trying it.

Cyclingmollie: if you've got them electronically do pass them along by pm if you want. if not, am sure i can find one on the web.

Hurrah! Signals at 95.8 megacycles now being recieved loud and clear in my kitchen, and a ball of kamut dough is now beginning to rise on the shelf above the radiator.

I also got to hear Naughty Jim's faux pas :)

P.S. in the spirit of the "no swearing" rule he does (accidentally) use a rude word. So if you don't like naughty words, don't go searching for it on youtube. If you do, I recommend it, if just to hear his coughing fit attempt to cover it up.

Morrisons sometimes have spelt loaves in their breadbaskets. They're yummy! I hadn't heard of spelt before CyclingPlus talked about flour and energy (and the awfulness of the Chorleywood Bread Process).

Thanks Arellcat, in my ignorance I'd never heard of spelt flour or the CBP but you (and Wikipedia) have encouraged me to try the former and seek to avoid the latter sometimes.

Radio 2 has had dreadful reception for the past few days so I've been listening via the telly. If someone would like to bring me some fresh bread, that would be great.

Okay, I'm off to try that right now before we end up eating what's available from Tesco's. That's a good looking loaf kaputnik. Will post pictures.

I've finished the Kamut loaf already. It forms a very short dough, texture similar to a bran scone almost. Sweet, nutty, dense and moist. It's got quite a low gluten content which I presume is responsible for this.

Flour was (relatively) expensive though so I think it will be a one off. I prefer bran scones anyway. That's what I'll bake tonight.
