A bike is not just for Christmas?

Another thread had me thinking about this. Does that fact that children tend to get new bikes for birthdays and Christmas change how they are viewed by them, are they more likely to think of them as toys/luxuries rather than as everyday utility items?

I presume no one waits for Christmas to get a new fridge, lawnmower or car.

“Does that fact that children tend to get new bikes for birthdays and Christmas”

Don’t know how much a bike is a still a ‘traditional’ Christmas item.

For many children (depending on the current fashion) ‘a bike at Christmas’ has been replaced by skateboards, scooters, computer games etc.

Birthdays are still a good key date - especially when in ‘warmer’ months.

Well, the bike shops still believe that Christmas is a time for kids' bikes :-)

There's always the challenge of needing to make sure that a bike suits the giftee (size / style / fit etc.) vs the need for Christmas secrecy. I'm not sure how this can be resolved though without breaking the magic! Our son's birthday is a week before Christmas so our thinking is that if he needs a bike in the middle of the year, he'll get one then. If he needs one in December then it will be a present, but done out in the open. He's too young yet to care, luckily. That doesn't stop me lusting after an Early Rider Belter for him though!
