If anyone is interested in becoming (more) involved in POP, we're meeting at the Bike Station 6-7:30pm, Thursday 23rd November.

    http://pedalonparliament.org/pop-2018-can-you-help/

I know that some people who wanted to can't make it - that was the best date we could manage. If you can't make it but do want to help and aren't already on the POP Slack group, PM me your email address and I'll add you on. We really do need many more people on the ground in Edinburgh - especially as there was such an active and committed group in Glasgow.

Bump - be good to get new people and new ideas involved in making #pop2018 a bigger success.

I'll come along and see if I can be of use. Any need to register or anything like that?

No need to register, you can let us know if you're coming here but it's not crucial.

Sadly its clashing with Cycle Rail Awards in crowd-funded venue on site of former gin-palace.

One detail that might be considered us that it might be as much a celebration picnic that also reminds us and our MSP's what has been achieved, whilst remembering what efforts it has taken to get there (and remind them that we are still an engaged lobbying force)

Perhaps also return to the converging rides from distant parts

"Perhaps also return to the converging rides from distant parts"

    Did these ever stop?

Just needs one person to say 'I'll be leaving X at about y' to make something happen.

I think I can make it - I was going to something else but I think this is more important, so already have my pass for a few hours.

I can't come tonight, but I would be glad to support with an HP Feeder Ride as in previous years. Given the feedback we had from Council and Police this year, though, I am expecting that this will actually become part of the 'main event' along with the Corstorburn ride. Either way, happy to help where I can. Perhaps @Hankchief can update and involve me later as appropriate.

Stuck on a late train and would miss the entire meeting so going to head home to family. Maybe catch some of you at PY tomorrow for the "goss"

I can't be there either, but happy to lead a Corstorburn feeder with my merry band of helpers.

Happy to help with Ratho feeder if that is being repeated?

Sorry I missed this but you will see from my other thread that I ended up trying to provide some assistance to someone who had been de-biked on the NEPN.

Looks as if we've (fingers crossed) got the nucleus of an organising group for Edinburgh (basically to replace what SRD used to do singlehandedly).

If anyone wants to be involved peripherally or more closely let me know and I'll send a Slack invite.

Thanks to those who could make it - it wasn't a great night for travelling (especially as I got off the train at Lockerbie to discover it had been snowing!)

Thanks for organising. Nice to put a few more faces to (CCE and other) names too.

Yes, a good and necessary meeting, thanks Sally. Good to feel the PoP vibe in November.

Also good to have someone say 'This must be the Scaffolding Bike™....' and for that person to turn out to be @Frenchy.

“Nice to put a few more faces to (CCE and other) names too.”

I’m sure PoP must have plenty of non-CCEers involved - especially outside Ed - but it’s good to see the sort of people who ‘like’ CCE actively helping.

I had wondered if PoP should take a break in Ed next year (and concentrate energy/resources in other cities) but after recent events I think it’s important to keep reminding CEC and SG that Edinburgh is (wants to be) a cycling city.

    PoP is not like P4S.

The latter is a pleasant day out or a challenge.

PoP is people coming together to show they want better - for themselves, their children and everyone who would like to cycle.

There was a time when “l would like to cycle, but” meant ‘not for me, too wet/hilly/other’.

Now it’s clear there really are LOTS of people who would cycle/more if there was decent infrastructure, less favouring of motors etc.

In September, I might have agreed with 'resting' POP in Edinburgh this year. But having looked at the Picardy Place stuff, it's clear that while we're making progress in small pockets of government, local and national, there are still pervasive structural forces at work that simply assume that the car is the only real means of transport. So we keep pushing and we try and reach beyond the 'us' ...

“So we keep pushing and we try and reach beyond the 'us' ... “

    I think it’s working.

No-one should underestimate Sally’s role in this.

“So we keep pushing and we try and reach beyond the 'us' ... “

It’s been said many time -

‘Needs to be more unity/co-operation with other groups - esp walking ones.’

This is definitely getting a lot better.

PoP instigating Pedestrian On Parliament will have helped.

I remain mystified as to why The Cockburn is (publicly at least) keeping well away from Picardy Place.

Does Sustrans mail out PoP stuff to members?

But it’s beyond ‘people we know’. It’s about attracting (and informing) people who might be thinking about “active travel” and those who have no idea what it might mean.

Has SG stopped the various inane TV ad campaigns?

Wonder where the money goes now.

PoP is SO much better value for money!,

Presumably they're big fans of Picardy Place "returning the area to its historic layout"?
[I think that CEC reference refers to the nineteenth century layout, with a triangular block of buildings, rather than the actual effect of returning to the 1970s...]

Yes, and I think the roads were MUCH narrower.

Wish they'd spend some money on more nane ones instead, just generally promoting cycling as a good thing.

Scenario: Morning traffic jam, with a proper segregated cycle lane next to it. Crowd of cyclists are at the light as car traffic light goes red.

Cyclist at front looks at the harassed driver and passengers in the front car, shakes his head with a sad look that says 'So sorry mate' and pedals off with the crowd when the cycling light changes. Crane shot shows cars in a solid jam ahead whilst cyclists are flowing freely.

Cut to office. The cyclist is at his desk looking fresh and productive as driver stumbles in late. Same pitying look from cyclist as driver walks past.
