"A TEAM of regeneration experts costing £400,000 have been appointed to drive forward development in four key areas of the Capital."

"The high-ranking staff, who have been given two-year contracts on a salary of £50,000 a year, will each be assigned a separate area of the city when they start in January."

While £50k is clearly a lot of money by many people's standards, it's not really what counts as "high-ranking" pay these days!

The south-east of the city is earmarked as an area suitable for major housing developments - particularly at Craigmillar - and bioscience specialists. In the west of the city, the council wants to bring a company with a headquarters as big as RBS to the area, as well as a series of other smaller financial firms. It also wants to investigate whether it can bring in a major new music and conference venue and an international trade centre.

Former council assets are among those being marketed as development opportunities in the city centre, while Forth Ports and EDI are behind much of the plans to develop the Waterfront.

RIGHT so what are four people going to manage that all the public and private sector people haven't managed in the past 10 years??

    "they start in January"

Well let's hope they look at walk/cycle/bus access to these areas - and keeping them going in all weathers...

Hummm, a "bioscience" zone, I seem to remember Midlothian trying that one... Then they shot themselves in the foot by trying to restrict access by public transport. Thinking about it, the Bush Estate is still waiting for it new cycle path.

    £400,000

How much salt and shovel / miniplough hours would that buy to keep some of the main cycling arteries clear? As those of us who've been braving the roads have found out, motor vehicles are part of the problem in creating the treacherous surfaces - no matter how frequently you send ploughs and gritters over them..

    Sigh. T.I.E.

Why would anyone want to place anything here?? It's so cold! I should go to the main route into Edinburgh and turn people back! or at least place a sign: "abandon all hope...".

THE company behind a £500 million expansion of Edinburgh is to be formally wound up after its ambitious plans collapsed because of the recession.

Shawfair Developments - originally set up as a joint venture between the city council, Midlothian Council and Miller Developments - was behind plans for a new town of 5000 homes, schools, offices, parks and an industrial estate at the former Monktonhall Colliery in Midlothian.
