CCE Top Up Annual Mileage Ride

On the 2017 Goals thread there was discussion about doing a ride between Christmas & New Year to ensure we all hit our annual mileage targets.

So I've been thinking how it might work as we will have different distances left to cover. I've done my mileage so I'm relatively easy how far we go.

We could do laps of Arthurs seat and you peal off once you've had enough but that probably won't keep people interested enough.

So how about taking a train somewhere and then if people want to join later or bail early they can.

Carlisle has the benefits of usually a tail wind home, but has limited options for others to join / bail. Greenroofer & I did this last year, & I did it the year before as well.

The East Coast has better options and being nearer the coast is likely to be milder. Alnmouth is a 100mile ride from Edinburgh, or Morpeth 120 miles (or at push Newcastle 140miles).

With Berwick (60miles from Edin), Dunbar (30miles) and then Drem (20miles) and all stations further in.

To give plenty of time/options and to maximise what little daylight there is an early train would be required. I'm going to suggest the 29th as there are more trains on weekdays and less likely that shops/cafes close early.

5.48 from Waverley calls at Alnmouth 6.55, Morpeth 7.11 & Newcastle 7.26 (there is also a direct train to Newcastle 5.40 - 7.02).

As it is the ECML there will only be a few bike spaces :( but prices are nearly as cheap as my fish supper tonight :)

Once we have established our starting point, if people didn't want an early start they could join us at Berwick, where no doubt we'd be stopping for refreshments.

What do people think? Anyone up for joining me?

Small print: This is not an organised ride, you're responsible for yourself and whether you & your bike are up for the distance yada yada yada. Lights will be essential.

    GREAT idea.

    Not me.

Think there will be 6 bookable bike spaces.

    Yip.

100m max for me. Carlisle via Innerleithen great as tail wind. Coastal routes fine, but I don't really know them.

    29th fine by me.

If it is only the choice of day that is putting of the hoards from 8+ hours of wheeled enjoyment in the cold & potentially wet/snowy twilight, you should have said..

    31st is out for me.

30th is a possibility but tend to have fewer trains on a Saturday.

    28th is also a possibility.

    Take your pick.

Did I mention that there will be stops for cake & warming hot chocolates :-)

    28th works better for me.

    any route thoughts ?

If its going to be horrific weather, I'm not sure if i'd prefer a route i know (so can obsess about the hills to come) or one I didnt know (so I can obsess about the hills that might come).

If it's just thee & me we can choose which ever date and route we want.

So 28th it is - with added recovery pastry at PY on 29th.

I'm not fussed about route either & if no one wants a half day trip we have more flexibility. Given greenroofer's aborted Carlisle run at the weekend we may be more likely to persuade him to join us if we go for that route.

Carlisle, turn right at Lockerbie Academy, Eskdalemuir, past the Buddists, Gordon Arms for lunch, Innerleithen for hot chocolate before trundle up/over that dratted hill and home in time for Coronation St/Eastenders/Crossroads/Eldorado.

    That's a fair trundle.

    Let's do it.

It a positive lie in with the 1st train at 6.15 from Waverley or 6.19 from Haymarket where I'll be getting on (ticket booked) Look out for someone wearing a red carnation ;-)

    Anyone else?

Its an interesting idea. This is my fourth week off they bike trying to recover from my third chest infection this year. so I'm afraid I can't go as I don't want to get pneumonia.

    163.9km / 101.8miles.

    more than far enough.

    ticket bought, bike booked.

Now pretty sure I'll be free on the 28th, but a 6am start is not so tempting. Might manage to meet you at the Gordon Arms or in Innerleithen, though.

having done a couple of long rides (+100km) this month, I am having 2nd thoughts - my average on the commuting bike on these roads is about 20kmh, so this is a min of 8hrs on the bike plus stops.

it'll be a long, long day.

"it'll be a long, long day"

    Aye, but very rewarding too.

"a 6am start is not so tempting"

08.12 gets into Lockerbie at 9.10 - would be a c.30min wait before the Carlisle party get there (i.e. me).

Being only 60miles ahead of my mate and having just been asked to hand out presents as 'you know who' I think my waist line could do with a little exercise, so I'm still likely to do the Carlisle run (or something similar).

Not heard from Galaxy or Greenroofer lately...

if you are OK with a 20kph average, I'm still up for it with the previous caveat ie horizontal rain = DNS.

Sure. My current commuting speed is only 15kph and my last long ride was the start of August.

Mind you, I could always bring my Trailgator for whoever needs it first ;-)

Weather check the day before - here's hoping for a dry tailwind.

Does the stoker get to control the buttons for HankChief's helmet?

The spread things out... the stoker has the helmet buttons but the T-a-L passenger has an old Garmin to look at. My thinking was that see our speed would encourage the passenger to pedal.

And it worked! In the first week of him having the Garmin our commute went from 30mins, to 26min, to 25mins, to 24mins and finally 23.5mins :-)

Amazing what we can do with some teamwork.

Unfortunately, come the next Monday we've been back to 30mins commutes. It was good while it lasted :'(

Is this a competition to see how much understatement you can fit into 1 sentence?

Now now. I would be pedalling SOMETIMES - when @HankChief yells "boost!". Probably. Maybe. Unless distracted by his helmet control button (... not a phrase I expected to type in this forum).
