Leith Walk human-protected bike lane intervention

Spokes and Living Streets have been invited to a meeting with the Tram programme (that is now in charge of Leith Walk) to discuss options. I would welcome feedback/suggestions that we can take to the meeting - mcdbristol116@gmail.com

I don't recall these drawings being published previously.The Orca's were removed a week or so back with no consultation. Afterwards, they were said to be a trial - the Terms of Reference and success/failure criteria unknown. Glasgow have trialled similar with different options and wrote a whole report - although I've only found the trial definition online.
Apparently as well as the incidents mentioned in Spokes' Tweet pedestrians had been tripping over them and were in danger of falling into moving traffic!
Can anyone post some pictures of what was installed?

As part of the Leith Programme, new cycle ways have recently gone live on Leith Walk, along with the ‘two-stage right turn’ at McDonald Road to help less confident cyclists turn right safely.
To help make it clear where the cycle lane meets the general traffic road space, ‘soft segregation’ in the form of ‘Orca’ lane separators were introduced on a trial basis at a number of locations.However, this four-week trial highlighted that the Orcas may pose an increased safety risk for pedestrians, with reports of some safety issues from pedestrians and cyclists. The Orcas have subsequently been removed and Transport Convener, Councillor Lesley Macinnes, has instructed Council officers to carry out an options analysis to find the most appropriate way of both helping cyclists feel safe while using the dedicated lane and minimising any trip risk for pedestrians. Cllr Macinnes has asked me to lead this.
A small working group consisting of those copied above met earlier this week to discuss options and agreed that input from SPOKES and Living Streets into discussions at an early stage would be very helpful. I am therefore looking to arrange a meeting for some time next week for us to discuss the options and hopefully reach a consensus.
PS Please find attached drawing showing the orcas and where they were installed during trial period. The purpose of installing the orcas was to delineate where the cycle lane meets the general traffic road space and were not installed as a safety measure.
PPS What l meant was the orcas were not installed at these locations in response to any specific safety concern, I agree they are used as a protection measure.

Strange wording. The problem isn't that we feel unsafe using the lane without the little bumps but that we're completely unable to use it due to parked cars.

Big Christmas bash tonight but fully intend to get along tomorrow.
Having said that, any bash which has Irvine Welsh and Bill Drummond on the guest list is liable to get messy. Or at least finish on a different day to the one it started, so no promises.

Am I right in thinking that until this protest was organised, the council were indicating that brighter paint would be plenty. Now suddenly they're unanimous for hard segregation. Why does it take such effort for them to do the blatantly right thing?!

Yes, though it’s hard to know who/what made the difference.
It’s clear that LM is very keen on ActiveTravel and understands ‘the issues’ - and some of the ‘difficulties’/‘oppositions’.
Which is not saying ‘it’s fine no need for any more campaigning’.
As has been said on CCE many times ‘it’s not (just) about cycling’.
It’s very much about people - and how they travel, live, shop, work etc.
More people thinking about what they want for themselves, friends, families and visitors - and saying so, and telling politicians - is obviously a good thing.

Stickman and others - no, not the length of the lanes - just where the lanes end and cyclists merge with traffic - see PS from Rob Leech in my previous post "The purpose of installing the orcas was to delineate where the cycle lane meets the general traffic road space ". One of the problems with all this is that the cycle lanes are not mandatory, so I assume that they can't install continuous separation. Normally Orcas etc would be installed with manadatory lanes and continuous white lines on either side - making them more visible. Mandatory lanes don't need a TRO, I think, so solid white lines could be used. Theoretically a solid white line cannot be crossed so also means no parking and is enforceable by police, but they tend only to be used when backed up by double yellow lines that do need a TRO but are more easily enforceable (again theoretical!).
I understand that there is an aspiration to get full segregated cycle lanes (that don't permit permit parking) down Leith Walk as part of the tram extension programme. This must be kept on the Agenda.Posted 6 years ago # -
Easier to avoid a pigeon in a segregated lane than a delivery van and taxi on the painted section.

@McD https://goo.gl/maps/7bYEBoDRAyP2 this is the section I use where orcas were removed. They seemed to be doing a reasonable job of preventing parking though I admit not having a very large sample.
I did see at least one lorry parked outside the orcas to unload, something inconceivable without them. I've also seen a few cars parked in the lane since their removal vs only one taxi while they were there.
