Any politicians?
Posted 7 years ago # -
I think I saw Susan Rae and Nigel Bagshaw
Posted 7 years ago # -
indeed they were both there. Lots of other notables, but no other politicians I knew or recognised.

I estimated about 60. However if people are saying 100, I'll go with that. There may have been more on the Scotmid side that I couldn't see.
Worth doing, & some friendly tooting from passing drivers.

"Loving idea of ninja [hedgehogs] although some cycle paths might need an upgrade to stealthy polar [bear]?! (Read all the way to the bottom of the article).Very glad to be getting this sorted."
Great work everyone.

One grumpy honking New Town tank - because we'd made a bike lane around a double parked car so he couldn't get up the lane he was in. We pointed at the parked car and suggested he direct his ire at the root cause.

Good stuff.

One old guy in a coat with eyes which would not meet mine trying to stir a bit - he walked between Roibeard and I then made some sort of weak crack about road tax as he waited for a gap in the motor traffic. He now knows that road upkeep is funded by council tax, to which cyclists are subject as normal human residents; that helm compulsion is not UK law and that it reduces cycling rates where applied, and that helmets do not prevent fatal internal injuries through crushing.

There was also one Leithbound drivist who appeared to take great umbrage at the line of humans. I think he wanted to park on the cycle lane that we were occupying, and while stuck in traffic his response — no doubt inspired by heroic-but-neanderthal USAnians in their big ol' pick up trucks with twin chrome stacks — in his clapped out car was to mash the accelerator to generate great clouds of thick, suffocating grey exhaust. I couldn't tell if it was petrol or diesel.
I commented to Roibeard that when the lights were at red and the queue of cars formed, the air quality went right down the tubes.
I did however notice that with one exception*, the drivers were remarkably respectful of the ASL box.
Thanks to unhurt for the loan of the luxurious silver tinsel!
* a dark red Volvo estate whose registration plate ended, rather ironically, with the letters "CCE".

as we were finishing up, a young man in a cheeky little red and white number shouted that we should get a life. if he'd been stopped, i'd have asked if his girlfriend knew he was driving her car.
(yes, cheap sexist shot, but guaranteed to grind his gears.)

Well done all. I'm recovering from some infliction or other so couldn't participate. I did come along at the start and saw very few cyclist using the route - I don't suppose anyone was counting?
I know people won't be using it as they would consider it dangerous (apart from when human-protected) and won't even get on a bike for the same reason.
Not sure what point I'm making really - but to start getting some numbers (like Spokes do on Lothian Road and Forrest Road) that could be used maybe at least to see what impact changes make might be useful - especially as the council don't have this kind of information.Posted 7 years ago # -
On the northbound side @urchaidh told me there was an attempted side-swipe - I guess from the same person @Arellcat is referring to. On the Southbound side some of us decided to form an unplanned cycle lane around the illegally parked cars which was fun. I only witnessed support from this - @stickman and I were asked by one passenger what we were up to and I was ready to explain ourselves robustly but we were generally strongly supported by everyone. The guy who hilariously parked in the cycle lane while were already there was made to feel pretty stupid and left with his tail between his legs - see this tweet:

Yes, that's what I was very pleasantly surprised by. Lots of people stopped to ask what was going on and almost without exception were hugely supportive.

The one I saw was a red-ish PHC (predictably) that came down pretty close to the line then cut it tight into Pilrig Street. Came very close to clipping @ARobComp who was the end of the line, just before the ASL.
Looked deliberate to me. Busses were making that turn without any drama.

Very good turn out and surprisingly little conflict with motorists. Some good buzz on social media around it & hopefully Edinburgh News coverage will be helpful, or is that too much to wish for?

...and some great photos wih a chance to play "spot the CCEr"

Not entirely clear why the forces of law and order didn't arrest the lot of them when they had the chance.

My fave bit of the 'protest' was when an older lady wandered over and asked what was going on. Then she started to take some pics before nipping into the line and joining us for around 20 minutes. Top effort!

Yes, we had a lass heading north on her bike join us for a while!

Hypothetically speaking, what would happen if you accidently crashing into a car that was double parked / parked in a bike lane / parked on double red lines ?
Is there any account given to the illegal nature of the parking of the car that was run into ?
