One of the problems with Last Jedi is that it references eight films rather than six.

...It's still watchable, but I have more gripes with it than TFA.

i thought it was pretty good. Certainly better than the other three
I seem to be very much in a minority but something about it irritated me right from the start which I can't explain. I am not a fan of cut cut cutting between scenes and characters. I didn't care about any of them because I hadn't seen them for long enough. The robot was really irritating. I didn't like the slushy stuff between characters (Stardust? Whatever happened to "I love you" "I know"?) I didn't like that Donnie Yen mainly had to sit looking inscrutable and saying nonsense that was presumably supposed to sound wise. Have the writers ever seen a Donnie Yen film? Would they have done that with a white character?
And worst of all - this is probably a spoiler if you don't know anything about it so don't read if you haven't seen the film.

.The awful skinny, effeminate darth vader. What the hell were they thinking? Couldn't they at least have padded his shoulders or something if there is literally no-one left on the planet that can fill david prowse's uniform? I could accept that C3PO had put on weight in TFA as it was still him. But not this.(Capitals removed from names to help disguise who I am talking about)

Interwebby said all Vader scenes was added after the film was finished as part of its major reshoot as was the leia bit
plus a major ending rewrite and reshoot

Rider73 -Yes Rogue One indeed.
If they had got someone like Thor Bjornsson in it would have definitely lifted the film.
I also did not like the music. The "almost but not quite" quality of it probably helped set my brain to "dislike" immediately.
Also too many explosions and stuff. If you have to blow stuff up all the time to catch my attention, you lost my attention. And the CGI characters were rather weird.
Apart from that it was fine. ;-) And it is always good to see an AT-AT.
And you though Last Jedi was worse? Gulp. I will watch it anyway of course!

"that" CGI character creeped me out and removed me from the movie every time he was in it! considering it was a pivitol character, the cgi on it was rubbish - he could easily have been cut from the movie until the very end - and then as a reflection on a window type scene.
is it Disney thats causing the problems? are they too fixated on the past movies and bringing it all together - or too scared to let a true stand alone movie...stand alone?
As for TLJ - i think you'll either like it or hate it within 15mins of it starting

That is totally how I would have done it. In this situation, less would have been more.
Is it Disney? I don't know. I think that perhaps that is just how action films are made nowadays. All special effects and no substance. I did enjoy The Force Awakens but then I like J.J.Abrams. It just felt like Star Wars. Rogue One felt like Star Wars with everything 1" to the left.

Starting out with that made it work pretty well - I thought they'd leave it at that, but then there was more. The other one, fair enough; they could have just shown the clothes and played the word.

TFA certainly did quiet/still moments better - Episode IV owes a lot to its editing, which left plenty of quiet/still bits in despite the upped pace on the pacey bits. A few bits of Last Jedi stuck out horribly like the dinosaur chase in King Kong.

Disney are letting their success with the Marvel franchise influence their approach to the Star Wars franchise, most noteably with regards humour, which is rapidly becoming inappropriate in my view. That and the music were my main problems with the otherwise decent Rogue One... Now that Disney have bought 20th Century Fox, maybe that gives the opportunity to reinstate the Fox Fanfare at the start of the Star Wars films at least, although how long will it be until Disney is effectively the only studio in Hollywood?

@winpig - no RO was a digital theatre in 2d
i watched TLJ at IMAX 3D and its probably the best screen to watch 3D , in fact i would have changed my mind about 3D movies if they were all the same quality and vibrance of IMAX 3D - and its peaked my interest in seeing past 3d movies on IMAX if they ever come back.
makes me wonder if home 3D is a similar experience to IMAX 3D, and of course being at home you can move so close to the TV you dont see any non 3D "edges"....
I also wonder when Disney are doing the 4K releases of the originals, they seem to be behind the curve on this score, unless they are waiting for a lull in the Cinema releases to bring in the $$$
@jdanielp - totally agree there, didnt see it that way until you mentioned it.

@Min the level of humour Disney have going works for me in the Marvel films, partly because those stories mostly take place in our own world (Thor: Ragnarok pushed the envelope too far for my liking, but is also one of the least Earth-based stories to date), but it is increasingly undermining the previously distinctly otherworldly Star Wars Universe.

That is probably why I didn't find it funny then. I would have to watch it again to be sure so it is not going to happen. ;-)
