Law chiefs say the numbers prove seasoned crooks are switching to stealing high-value cycles because they are easier to acquire and sell on – while incurring lesser sentences if caught.

And the impact of having a bike stolen can have a lasting effect as track cyclist Callum Skinner, who claimed Olympic gold in the team sprint event at the 2016 games in Rio explained: “I was a victim of bike theft when I was 13 in the Bruntsfield area.

NextDoor, the neighbourhood site, has had reports of bike thieves. Guys breaking into sheds and nicking the best cycles.

Yesterday a thieving ******* walked up to the bike racks at the front of the Lloyd's office on Orchard Brae and, in full view of the security guards, used bolt cutters to steal a bike. The security guards watched the whole thing and didn't even shout at the guy to stop. Apparently the guards excuse was something to do with "insurance cover".

Security pays minimum wage. If I was that person I would be working very much to rule. You pay the minimum you get the minimum.

A sad state of affairs. I don't suppose it was the bank's insurance they were referring to either.

They are paid by the bank to guard bank property so in this situation they are no more culpable than any other random Joe Bloggs who happened to witness such a theft.

Should clarify that these bike racks are on bank property, and were moved from the rear of the building to the front as it was thought that would make them more secure.

The guards could have reported it to the police.

An off-duty policeman witnessed this and...phoned it in. He won't have been the only witness yet it seems no one did anything. https://www.edinburghnews.scotsman.com/news/bikes-worth-8-000-stolen-from-cyclists-in-ocean-terminal-car-park-1-4709637

"You pay the minimum you get the minimum."

That was well below the minimum of a decent human being.

We got an email round today to say that there had been an incident and assault in our underground / secure car park.

3 men had tail gated a car into the premises and were trying to break into the bike store when questioned by a member of staff from one of the other tenant companies. They assaulted him and left (I don't have any more details, but hoping he is okay). Needless to say, the advice was to not approach such individuals.

Apparently another theft incident in the building over the street, 3 days prior, that matches the form.

    Haymarket Terrace for info.
