Hi guys
My stem decided to develop a nasty crack right on the seam. Well, TBH it is almost in two pieces now. Do you know anybody able to fix it (preferably in Edinburgh)?

IT’S TRUE!

Well done to ALL posters
It soon became useful and entertaining. There are regular posters, people who add useful info occasionally and plenty more who drop by to watch. That's fine. If you want to add news/comments it's easy to register and become a member.

Stems are probably not wise things to ‘fix’.
Hmm, I've got them set to be public...
Anyway, I know stems aren't "fixable" in general, but this one is from my recumbent with under-seat-steering, so it carries almost no weight. Ordering one would take ages, as they need to be ordered from Germany, so I'm trying easier way first.

Ah!
Wonder why it would crack?
Welcome, wintermute! My first thought was to suggest you have a word with Ben at Kinetics, but I agree it would be good to find a local solution if you can. I don't know of TIG welders in Edinburgh, but they will need the correct heat treatment oven.
You might be able to splint it temporarily using steel hose clamps and a spanner or two.
@chdot
No idea. I was cycling along Portobello promenade and just felt my handlebar flipping forward.
I had a small crash around two weeks before that, but found no damage when I inspected the bike.
@Arellcat
Yeah, heat treatment will be the biggest issue i think.
Another option is to find a donor stem that will slide inside the broken one and glue them together with some epoxy resin and fibreglass.
Problem solved. Thanks to Blueth-he passed my info to his mate Stuart, who did a great job mending my stem back together.
I hope mod won't mind some shameless advertisement ;), so if you need a welder give Stuart a call on 07732709004
