Very tiny victory

Was leaving work tonight going up new street when the first car of 2018 being driven the wrong way down the one way street came into view. I stopped and blocked the car and another car followed it in behind. Stalemate. I indicated calmly they were coming down a one way street. Still stalemate. I then had a car behind me, the driver of this vehicle to the rear stayed very calm. I stayed very calm. I have had so many of these interactions now at this street that I am pretty Zen about it. Both front doors of the first errantly driven vehicle opened and a very large man emerged from the passenger side whilst the driver starts screaming. However, just at this point a police officer appeared and the very large man was very nice (maybe he was always going to be very nice?). The second errant vehicle suddenly found reverse and was driven out of the picture and away up the Royal mile. The screaming driver of the first vehicle shut the driver door. The big passenger and I exchanged pleasantries, all happy. He re-entered the vehicle and it was reversed onto the wide pavement. I went up and onto the Royal mile. The first errantly driven vehicle then followed me, I pointed to Cranston street as the road they could go down (they were looking to enter the train station car park).

I have reported the fact this one way is routinely ignored to the relevant authorities And will do so again tomorrow.

"just at this point a police officer appeared"

A victory for the Long Arm Of The Law.

"maybe he was always going to be very nice?"

    I'm certain of it.

@crow, he was very calm and very nice. So it might be the case that he was going to be reasonable. His partner driving the car was stresse, maybe because there as no way out, stuck with me and the car behind me and the other car at the back. Hence the screaming. That stopped the instant the polis appeared of course

That must finally be your negative polis karma being replenished after your unfortunate event on West Cutlins.

    Naturally!

That dodgy one way bit is why I prefer to use the Caltongate courtyard/mini plaza/favela of street food catering and takeaway coffee huts then push over the zebra across the Royal Mile. Can then connect with Holyrood Road through archway, it's a grand cut through.

@wingpig yes that score is now settled, good shout

Do you have that 'Police follow this bike' sticker that G4S cash vans have?

I think a good part of the problem is that the sign at the top of New Street is the "motorbike leaping over a car" which far too many people do not recognise as meaning "no motor vehicles". (I'm pretty sure that's one of the reasons why the Castle Street pedestrianised zone is so routinely ignored.)

I think the answers is to have No Entry signs with "Except cycles" below, like they have at the junction of Canaan Lane with Morningside Road. Longer term, better driver education and testing wouldn't go amiss either.

(I would note that far too many people on bikes seem to ignore the No entry signs with "Except trams" below at either end of the Haymarket tram stop. I'm surprised that that hasn't already led to a few 'difficulties'.)

  9. There are No Entry signs (and related No Left Turn / No Right Turn signs) and 'Buses / Cycles Only' signs and additional wording painted on the roads around and on the Shore, but almost no-one paid any heed until a Bus Lane camera was finally installed almost 3 years after the street was made one-way in one direction.

There are still a few who will chance their arm and drive through the multitude of signs (I usually see them pause, look around and then just go for it anyway), but I'm sure they rethink their attitude when the fine and points endorsement notification letter lands on their doormat.

Signs mean nothing to drivers who see any restriction as an affront to their right to drive where they want. It takes the near-100% chance of being caught & fined to make any difference to driver behaviour.

The only time I've seen a driver hesitate when trying to use the bus gate between Priestfield and Peffermill Roads was when there was a bus on its way through from the other side.
Is the bus channel between the infirmary and Greendykes currently enforced?

The bus lane between the Infirmary and Greendykes is still the council's biggest money spinner afaik.

I hadn't realised there was a bus gate there, so had a look at it on Google Street View. Their driver drove through it as well.

Googol can afford the fixed penalty.

Once, in 2009, it looks like. It's been to the Prestonfield Avenue/Priestfield Road/Clearburn Road junction four times since then but not further south. Perhaps they did actually tell their drivers not to do it after getting fined the first time?

"The supposed ban on using the bus lane came in years ago but everyone I knew ignored it.

"I think they should have clearer signs so people know the cameras are finally up and running."

I think some people have quite unbelievable concepts of how the world works.

"To have a bus lane issuing 186 tickets a day is excessive, and that means that something's not right - either the design of the street is incorrect, or the signage is incorrect."

It couldn't possibly be that the selfish, lazy idiots behind the wheel are to blame? Oh no, nothing's ever their fault, is it.
