Apologies if this is old news on the forum, but I came across this: Stop at Red and thought there might be some interest in a campaign to encourage and support cyclists who stop at red lights. Not sure if there is one for motorists....

I think that we should be allowed to make left-hand turns during red lights, on certain junctions with cycle lanes, provided that the lane is clear. That's the way they keep the bikes moving in the Netherlands (although not on every junction).

I found it terrifying in Copenhagen as a pedestrian to have a stream of bikes cutting across when I had a 'green man'.

  4. Intriguing, I found in Copenhagen that the bikes stopped to let people cross if they had a green man. The 'give way to a smaller 'vehicle' than you' theory seemed to filter right the way down through all road users...

Anyway, on Stop at Red, if I still had the citycycling back issues online I'd point to an article written by Helen Simmons on why she wouldn't sign up to the campaign, which I wholeheartedly agreed with.

Well, terrifying may have been too strong a term. They were moving slowly and certainly slowed more to let pedestrians across, but I've gotten used to be able to just walk out if there's a green man, so the experience of looking up and suddenly seeing a horde of bicycles bearing down on you (albeit carefully) was a bit nervewracking.

  6. That's true. A bit like being a pedestrian in London!

Try Israel, cars are allowed to turn right (as it is there) if the road is clear but they regard pedestrians in the road as being clear. I don't like it. It will get abused.

  8. Not sure I'd get into Israel (not without an invasive search anyway) - I have a Lebanese stamp in my passport...

They liked me so much they didn't want me to leave. Well judging by the fact it took 2.5 hours for them to go through my bag at the airport. I think the chap who spent a very long time minutely inspecting my underwear enjoys his job. Bleuch.

Only 3079 people have signed up. I usually stop at reds. I sign up to a UsuallyStopAtRed campaign.

Anth why don't you precis the Helen Simmons article again, I have vague recollections but wouldn't want to start a thread on unsubstantiated opinion as I like more factual based opinions
