I have bought a used bike with 3 x 9 speed deore gears. I want to fit STI gear/brake levers (I am putting drops on). Can I do that if I change the front derailleur to a road one? Will that work? I was thinking of getting used sora or tiagra levers off the Bay.

Why do you want/need to change front mech?

    Are the brakes V?

Drop levers usually work better with cantis.

I thought the amount of cable pull required is different between road and mountain bike/touring mechs

The brakes are cantilever - is this okay with road STIs?

“I thought the amount of cable pull required is different between road and mountain bike/touring mechs”

See how it works in practice.

“The brakes are cantilever - is this okay with road STIs?”

    Yes.

Depending on individual brakes, brake blocks and (probably) other variables (inc rim/tyre size) I think dual pivots can be better than cantis with drop levers.

Cantis tend to be better with straight levers, but that’s not really surprising.

Not trying to put you off!

I do prefer drops. The bike came with butterfly bars. I might try those first before the big change

It's also got a bouncy Brooks saddle. That may also be swapped

It's a Surly LHT. I narrowly missed out last week but my OH gave me a licence to buy with some enthusiasm. Presumably because I'll have to take all the luggage.

Thought it might be when you said 9 speed and Brooks.

    Normal LHTs come with drops.

    This is current spec -

Front Derailleur Shimano Deore T611-3, Silver

    UPDATE

Realised they have bar end shifters rather than STIs - don’t know if LH lever is indexed.

Thanks that's interesting. This is brake levers plus bar end shifters. The shifters are for v brakes but there are similar for cantilever. Another choice v brake vs cantilever! I think spa do surly set ups with sti levers. I'll see if there's a spec

I originally purchased my Trucker as a frameset, as I had a pretty good idea of how I wanted to build it up. My frame then went through many builds over the years as I experimented with parts: different brakes, different handlebars, different wheels and an evolution from derailleur gears to an internally geared hub. Basically, I used and abused bike parts and setups until I got the Trucker to a place that suits me.

Spa has sora levers coupled with a sora front derailleur and MTB chainset, deore on the back, plus cantilever. Perhaps that's what I'll try. But first I'll see if I can get on with the butterfly bars

    Here’s an interesting variation...

    Chainset XD-2 Touring Tripe

You'd think tripe would have its limitations
