My Sturmey Archer five-speed is indeed broken and needs to be replaced (at least The Bicycle Works is unable to determine how to fix it) so I'm looking at buying a replacement Nexus or even Alfine but of course they're pretty expensive. Where online would be a good-value place to buy either a Nexus or Alfine hub with drum brakes and gear lever and fittings for a horizontal dropout?

SJS cycles stocks just about every hub gear known to humankind.

If you're after a fully built up wheel, check out eBay and the German company Taylor Wheels in particular. Bargaintastic (though a bit less than before the pound dropped against the euro). They also have an online shop.

I got my Alfine hub (+wheel) from Taylor Wheels. Came from Germany with all the gubbins. Unbeatable price.

Two things to consider: (1) that the OLD spacing of your frame matches the 135mm spacing of an Alfine hub and (2) that you get the right non-turn washes for your dropouts. I don't think the standard ones will work with horizontal dropouts.

As suspected the nexus 8 cheap. For a reason. 28 inch of course is German for 700mm, which is 11mm out which is not very exact?
