Disappointed to find this morning that someone somewhere has flicked a switch and I can no longer access CCE from my work computer.

I am already feeling slightly twitchy without my regular morning dose of whimsy from @gembo.

Productivity at a major Edinburgh-based financial institution may ride markedly though.

But you have still managing to post I see...

I also like your Freudian slip of "ride" instead of "rise"

For what it's worth CCE is inaccessible from the PCs in a certain London, Reading and Stirling-based financial institution on the basis that it concerns 'cars and vehicles'.

The same place forbids access to the Daily Record website on the grounds that it engages in phishing attacks.

I'd have thought concerted action by the BUG would get CCE white listed for light lunchtime use. It is after all a treasure trove, not just the stage on which we admire @gembotronic whimsy.

can you not argue that you need access to find out if your commute home will be safe?

I think part of the problem is the way certain "middleman attack" type internet protection services (like Zscaler for example) categorise sites like CCE.

If CCE is categorised as "Miscellaneous" or "Sports" it may get blocked.

Perhaps there is a way to cloak CCE so it presents itself as "Business & Economy" or something similar?

    Admins, is this possible?

I had a similar experience once. I kind hearted IT rebel told me (Windows PC network btw)

Click the windows menu button bottom corner
    click Control panel
    click Network & internet
    click Internet options
    click the "connection" tab
    click LAN settings
    uncheck the "proxy server" box

you know what, he was right.

It used to reset itself frequently, but the above always worked and no-one from IT seemed to be aware I was doing this (except the rebel)

Having a look around, it seems we are wither categorised as:
"Newsgroups and Message Boards" "Sports" or "Bicycling"

One workaround would be to look at using a newsreader if it's not blocked such as Newsblur - or look at this option if reading on your phone. Although I understand that some folks do like reading the forum on phones!

Do and like are but the same thing! The text is VERY SMALL INDEED.

I expect the categorisation is done by keyword? So all we have to do is talk about anything except cycling and the cycling-specific nature of the forum will remain a secret from our forum-sniffing overlords.

    In short: more thread drift.

In this organisation you either have access to blogs/forums or you don't. So perhaps requesting access to a work-related blog/forum will be enough to give you access to CCE.

“The text is VERY SMALL INDEED“

Have you looked in the phone’s settings for text size options?

Yes! It's because there isn't a mobile-compatible version of the page, so you have to zoom in but then the text goes off the side. (Plus larger text settings would make the rest of the internet HUGE TEXT on the phone browser). So I just squint...

@unhurt - You may already know about this, but just in case you don't - it took me an embarrassingly long time to discover/learn/be told that double tapping on the screen auto-zooms a web page so that the text is readable.

I thought this forum was only ironically about cycling?

@Frenchy but it's (a) still very wee (b) the page doesn't auto-fit, so it just zooms in on some text but cuts off e.g. the sidebar with the poster's name...

@ARobComp it is sometimes surely? When not about garden bird sex lives, sticks or other core topics.

@IWRATS "a certain London, Reading and Stirling-based financial institution"

I hear a whisper that you may also be about to open a satellite office in Edinburgh Park.

    @Nelly

That would make sense for them. Many staff commute by car from Edinburgh anyway, which is vile.

I'm not there any more. I didn't like it very much.

@Nelly: I've heard that too. They are having trouble recruiting because of their current location.

    @iwrats @stickman

My moles tell me that it's only a smallish part of the business, led by a new hire director.

My moles suspect the rationale is less to do with the sensible issues you have both raised, but more to do with reducing HIS commute.

I know where he stays, and that fits.

I have experience of said director at another pensions provider, and he (it's always a he, is it not?) is adept at spending a lot with not a lot of end product.......

Glad I am out of it all, to be honest.

@Nelly: that's funny, my friend who works there was saying the exact same things about said director as he had experience of him from working at our ex-employer...

    “I have pm'd you”

Don’t forget (everyone) laws of libel still apply on a forum.
