Not much traffic this morning - All West Lothian schools and Edinburgh private schools already on their hollybags

Yeah, I noticed that, felt very odd. Colinton Road all the way down to Ardmillan much quieter than usual.

At least we now know where all the traffic comes from.

@Luath, lot of it also comes from Fife - 78000 trips a day ove tver the new forth crossing. THese trips have to end somewhere and that where is Edinburgh (mostly)

Council tax in Fife and West Lothain should pay for the upkeep of Edinburgh roads (a retired colonel living in Murrayfield suggests)

“Council tax in Fife and West Lothain should pay for the upkeep of Edinburgh roads”

Or maybe some sort of Edinburgh motoring tax(?)

@Luath: At least we now know where all the traffic comes from.

It's not just the school run: people take time off work during the school holidays to look after the kids and/or* take them away on holiday, so there's fewer commuters as well.

    * I say "or" since plenty of parents choose resorts specifically because they provide childcare services!

All Perth services are subject to delays due to high volume of traffic on the Dunkeld road and Crieff road. Sorry for any inconvenience caused.

I suppose the surprising thing for me is that much of the traffic in Edinburgh* doesn't seem to be connected to people with children at Edinburgh state schools.

    Though that's maybe obvious.

*Gross and anecdotally based over simplification.

Perhaps points to the fact that much of the traffic in Edinburgh is not created by local residents.

Commuters from the commuting belt is one major factor. I'm assuming also that a fair proportion of children attending the city's fee-paying school hail from outwith the urban areas.

@CHdot, an Edinburgh Motoring Tax would be a great idea, I am very surprised the great Prof David Begg never thought of something like that. (obviously he did but called it CC)

You do not notice this phenomenon except when school holidays do not overlap

Or when the FRB was closed for falling down reasons and all of fife had to stay in Fife - which was around Xmas IIRC and I had traffic free roads home out of city until maybe Diggers.

It is definitely a south west Edinburgh thing. West Lothian schools are on holiday as are Watsons. Edinburgh state schools and the other private schools are not. Watsons and Mary Erskine are not well located for public transport compared to Stewarts Melville, Heriots, Edinburgh Academy and St Georges. Kids from East Lothian for these schools pack the trains in the mornings.

Merchiston Castle are on hols too it would appear.

For some reason, visions of Billy Bunter and lashings of ginger beer spring to mind.

    Wrong holiday, but never mind:

I wonder what the retired Murrayfield colonel's thoughts on the congestion charge were. Seems like a pretty good way to charge people coming into the city from outside.

Retired Murrayfield Colonel was happy with the CC so long as his house was inside the boundary and he did not need to pay.
