Well at least one bit of the weather forecast has been accurate.

RAC traffic app on my phone is showing the A768 between Loanhead and Bonnyrigg as closed due to snow.

"It's got warmer again since chdot posted 40 mins ago:"
Indeed
Looking out of the window- small smattering of snow. Blue sky, fluffy white clouds with the sun peaking through. Slight breeze.
Wots all the fuss about??
Looks like new Transport Minister staying up all night has solved the problem!!

Interesting ride today (finally back) first of all I stopped twice to check what was making the rubby growly feeling on my bike, uh, that will be the mtb tyres I put on last night.
My cycle up to town (didn't do the paths) made me feel a bit dumb for putting them on, what with the wet, black, tarmc under wheel, but I persevered.
When I started snowing at the zoo I was glad of the overshoes ans slightly scary balaclava, but rather worried that I hadn't adjusted my brakes right.
When I finally took to the paths at maybury I was very glad of the knobbly tyres, they gave a bit more purchase on the snow that had just settled.
Only fell off once, into a fence at that pedestrian diversion at the tram depot, but managed to clip out (and grab the fence). The ride from maybury to the airport roundabout was horrible, icy snowy anklebreaking stuff.
Weirdly, from the airport roundabout to work was all melted apart for a stubborn wee ridge of ice in the middle of the path.
lesson of the day, should have just gone on the road from maybury to work, but really not happy to ride on that road.

Do they have anything to measure the ground temperature? Nothing's going to stick like the other week without a nice solid freeze the day beforehand.

"Do they have anything to measure the ground temperature?"
Seems not. Weather station on top of tower block which must surely pick up some building heat in still air.
"Nothing's going to stick like the other week without a nice solid freeze the day beforehand."
No, though there are plenty of places where ground temp still hasn't got above zero.

"SNOW swept back into the Lothians today, with Met Office forecasters predicting there is more to come."

We're basking in sunshine - the office aircon is on again...

Just can't make its mind up!
To be fair, it's only ±0.1°C or so.
Weather station on top of tower block which must surely pick up some building heat in still air.
And for the same reason, the wind speed measurement is not to official Met Office standards, as the anemometer is not elevated and remote.

I know, pretty impressive site really - and not really any 'less accurate' for urban Edinburgh purposes than the one out at Gogar.
As we all know there are very distinct micro-climates, partly related to height above sea level.
I'm told there's been no snow today in parts of the New Town - and presumably anywhere near the Forth.

Surely they can just use a normal height stick? (boom boom)

It's cold out here (West End).
'biting wind'
Muff/buff weather (and nice lined overtrousers).
Fountainbridge surface still terrible.
Quite a lot of surface ice - e.g. Gardners Cres.

The Gasmarket was a bit nippy at around 14:00 and some of the melt visible on the pavements as I went past this morning had already re-frozen. My phone-weather now has the same combination snow/sleet symbol down for tomorrow as it originally indicated for today. Wondering if I'll need my legwarmers on under my baggies to head home past the high-altitude and slightly exposed EBC for a spare saddlebag-fitment...

Shudder, suddenly not feeling so confident. Are the roads still okay?
Posted 13 years ago # -
"Are the roads still okay?"
Main roads that have been properly gritted should be.
BUT just come up Bruntsfield Place.
About 6 foot of ice in from kerb - i.e. inc. cycle lane - of course drivers 'don't understand' why bikes so far into 'their' space.

My journey was fine since it is almost all entirely main roads
which were mostly dry so not icy anyway (apart from all the
stuff which is still sticking out from the sides. Until I
turned in to the street before mine. It shone like glass and
was quite pretty in a way. Luckily I didn't get a close up view
of it.Posted 13 years ago # -
Same experience as chdot; this evening I cut through Oxgangs on my way home and although the main roads are ok, the side streets are getting quite slippy and I walked my bike for half a mile or so. Even the tyre tracks on the pavement left by one of the fabled Mini Tractors today had turned to ice.
Don't know about "braced" though. I'm more like resigned, but reasonably well-shod already from last week. Might be worth getting a bit more bread flour in while we can.

Same experience as Min - I kept well out from the side and avoided any red painted tarmac and anywhere that meltwater had collected as it is all shiny icerink now. Big patch on Melville Drive, cycle lane eastbound at first pedestrian crossing just after the gate guardian pillars.

was quite mental between balerno and juniper green this morning - slush, snow, sleet , horizontal hale, black ice, rain. But once through Juniper Green Central got quite a few overtakes cycling the wrong side of the road - getting quite used to it now. I think the BBC website doesn't update often enough from the met office site [which I think it bases its stuff on - also strnagely - livingston weather can be worse than edinburgh international and yet they are both recorded at the gogarbank station shum mishtake shurley?
