    More deaths cycling than driving

After three deliberate close passes on a 11-minute cycle from Kings Buildings to town yesterday afternoon on an ebike, I had to wonder whether the open-frame style of bike and/or my ordinary work clothing inspired some kind of additional driver rage.

I was treated to a deliberate close pass on Mayfield Road twice by the same driver, before I blowed a goodbye kiss to him in the queue of traffic at the Tesco express. I then had the third close pass by another driver near the Tesco Metro on South Clerk St by someone who simply had to get to the red light before me and couldn't wait for me to pass a parked van.

...or it is Tesco that makes them so angry?

Yeah it was probably just a coincidence. Those angry drivists were doubtless signed up members of Momentum still furious with Dame Shirley Porter's "homes for votes" council house sell-off scandal in Westminster borough. The fact they took it out on you was sheer bad luck, the runes were inauspicious, the planets out of alignment.

Many e-bikes are upright affairs so 'body language' from a drivers perspective is wrong.
I know people don't attribute much to drivers but I reckon that some do classify 'potential for rapid movement' by how far forward you are bent over on a bike and whether you have logos on your clothing. With Dutch style riders they expect Gazelles to move at around 11mph (Hart's Cyclery exempted of course). When incoming bike is at 16mph on level then risks increase as they fail to overtake cleanly. Same happens when pulling away from lights as an e-bike can reach max speed very quickly - even a laden UA is quite sprightly if you work through gears with Sport mode on.

@stiltskin - yes - I think e-bikers are hated more than 'bentriders. The latter are just a nuisance but can be burnt off on hills. E-bikers are sometimes less experienced too so do odd things.

@spytfyre - at 16mph you hit a wall and I prefer the recliner for fun as higher speeds aren't limited. However e-bike makes sense if your commute is up from (say) Leith to King's Buildings and you don't want to change clothes. (Forumers do this unaided I know but how do we get more people on two wheels).

I definitely *feel* like I get more respect and am more confident on the road on my 'normal' bike over my 20inch wheeled folding e-bike. I wear the same clothes on each. I'm inclined towards @Laidback's theory of 'potential for rapid movement'.
