BRAZEN bikes thieves blagged their way into a bank’s secure office building before trying to make off with staff bicycles.

Four youths, reportedly smartly dressed to avoid suspicion, “tailgated” staff with electronic passes into the RBS complex at South Gyle.

"An RBS spokeswoman confirmed police were called and CCTV footage handed over but dismissed claims the four were dressed in suits."

What does that mean then? That the headline and main thrust of the article was nonsense, only refuted in the tenth paragraph?

  3. We've had warnings posted at work (just along from that RBS building) about the thieves operating in the area.

They've previously raided our multi-story car park and stolen bikes, and came back twice shortly afterwards to do it again, and to almost make off with a motorbike.

We're now having an area of the car-park 'caged' to offer more secure bike parking, with cage entry controlled by a passcode keypad.

The 'smartly dressed' bit seems to be a new enhancement ;-)

It seems to go in cycles (sorry) - I seem to recall a bit of a spate of thefts at the Gyle a few years ago.

Usual story though - a few active toe-rags can cause a lot of irritation and use up a lot of police time.

They're really not that bright though, targeting workplaces which by and large will mainly hold commuter bikes.

@Snowy - 'commuter bikes' are not always valueless. My workplace bike store for some time held a rather lovely Trek Domane SL5 with fancy wheels that I'd estimate as worth upwards of £4k and that was never locked.

Yes, I think I rather meant that my perception of these gangs is that they would normally target expensive MTBs and carbon road bikes in preference to commuters which tend to be a bit more personalised/customised and have a bit more wear and tear? (we'll leave aside being dirt encrusted, maybe that's just me...)

And of course value isn't always monetary...

Perhaps commuters are more anonymous and thus easier to sell on? When my friends got their bikes stolen, his nice road bike was very quickly spotted as being very obviously nicked and returned, whereas her Bike Co-op hybrid was never seen again.

(This in Dumfries where anything that isn't a mountain bike or a hybrid stands out a mile)

A carbon bike would be hapless in Edinburgh as would snap at the first pot hole or fatigue over the bumpy roads. I read yesterday story of someone hitting pothole and bike snapping.

I had a small role in suggesting the concept for this system

The RBS at Gogarburn was commissioned by a smartly dressed thief
