Welcoming and well maintained?

Just the sort of place I don't want to cycle in the dark. Prime cycle infrastructure at Straiton heading back into town. It's clearly well-used at night - just not as a bike route...

I presume this is a bit that’s actually in Edinburgh (CEC), but might be responsibility of trunk roads people.

    UPDATE

Perhaps it’s not where I first thought, so probably MidL?

That reminds me of my first visit to Milton Keynes in 1990. Wandering these paths on foot in the dark, separated from the road by big overgrown hedges. Then picking up the local paper and reading about the epidemic of muggings...

For balance, I should point out that a second visit in 2013 saw me traversing similar paths on two wheels without incident. Different times, though.

@unhurt, I didn't even know that there was a path there. It's certainly one I wouldn't care to use; even on Matilda the Elephant Bike when riding into town I just stay on the main road.

Heading up the hill I usually go up to the shops and through the car park, past McDonalds, past all the carpet shops, past Sainsbury's, through the IKEA car park, and emerge at the top of the narrow ramp at the crossroads with Pentland Road, just before the Asda.

Why would you be cycling through bushes when there is a perfectly good and well signposted cycle lane available but metres away?

That cycle lane on the road is at that section is awful as get trucks turning to A701 and a left hook of some-type is quite likely. The way I go when go to Ikea or cosco is cycle although the shops on other-side then go under bridge on right hand side pavement.

Yeah, presume it's here next to bus stop? The vegetation could do with a wee trim!

@crowriver, yes - that's it. A bit back up the road there is a blink-and-you'll-miss-it sign suggesting the pavement in front of the cottages is shared use from there down past the bus stop (that you have to squeeze past):

As @Iwrats notes and @Ed1 confirms there is of course some lovely on-road infra in a 40 zone through a big roundabout with lorries if you prefer that sort of thing. Can't wait to make my choices if I ever come down that way in the dark at rush hour.

@chdot, yep, Midlothian - just outside the city limit. Suppose I should tweet them...

@Arellcat - nice to know there are alternatives, but I wonder how many people just try cycling the route once then give up.
