why do people steal the front tire?

Well I would guess some steal the front wheel for a tyre or a wheel but wonder if many do it just to be anoying. I think they choose the front as easier to take off. Noticed quite a few bikes with no front wheel or saddle. The quick release may have a lot to answer for. I always meant to get my front one changed away from quick release last think want in city.

I suppose if a desired bike is secured only (or most securely) by its front wheel then nicking another wheel would enable the theft.

I've never noticed a bike tethered in such a fashion, though I suppose I don't have the keen eye that raven-bait does. There was a theft like that in recent times as I recall.

I'm glad I got the quick releases on my commuting bike changed to unique key spindles when I bought it. My spare mountain bike has quick release front and back wheels, and I'm too paranoid to lock it up anywhere public...

“Operation Agora is making a significant impact on reducing the number of bike thefts in the capital.”

... in an article on how bike theft has gone up 47 percent in the last year.

But have you not noticed front wheels (only) locked to fences?

I have been pleasantly surprised, in the context of the current large amount of bike theft, to see that a very good bike which has now been chained up, presumably abandoned, in a highly visible place and passed by hundreds every day for months is still there.

Obviously I am not going to say where it is but some on here will have seen it.

There is a crackdown on bike theft. As part of the general operation on motorbike and bike crime. Although somewhat counter intuitive this may mean more bike crime (e.g. If it means more theft is reported) et cetera.

Does anyone know if the stats include break ins to bike shops? Bike Trax has had 3 in the last year,

Saw a police tweet yesterday that they'd arrested someone and recovered 30 stolen bikes.

I'm going to be accused of being a snob, but Cobden Road seems an unlikely place for a serial bike thief to live.

perfect area for not being suspected of any pilfering type crimes (it is all crimes against humanity, plundering of pensioners' savings down that way) but would have to steal a lot of bikes to cover the rent

On street view it shows one house that looks a bit iffy but could be a rented lock up or something

The police report does say that the bikes were recovered from Cobden Road, not that the offender lived there. As Ed1 says, a couple of properties on the street look like they could be lock-ups (or detached garages belonging to adjacent properties that could be sublet - which amounts to much the same thing).
