He did take a little longer than the train takes

Roughly three times as long. I'd have thought that a PhD student would be capable of performing such a straightforward calculation.
And "bike beats train by starting eight hours earlier" must be right up there in the list of non-stories which only get printed to fill a slow news day.

More to the point, where did he find up there that was producing "whiskey"? Or shouldn't we expect a London paper to know any better.

This story was in the cycling press so I guess the Standard have picked it up and embellished it a bit. I met James on the Merse and Moors Audax in April - nice guy, works at Edinburgh Uni. It's possible he's on this forum.

An excellent effort at publicising what a nightmare train services are with bikes, especially Virgin.

Indeed, having failed to make a booking for RttS I bought gembo and my tickets of someone who couldn't make the ride.
For a reason that only they know the booking was from Haymarket to Carlise with a separate booking from Waverley to Haymarket. Which seems fine except that Virgin don't load bikes at Haymarket.
Upon turning up at Waverley the platform mangers were looking very confused at their list as they appeared to have 6 bikes booked into the 4 spaces. I explained that gembo and myself were 4 of them but couldn't help with the other two which were only booked from Haymarket.
Another 2 riders to the sun had also turned up without a booking and got lucky as the Haymarket to Carlisle booking couldn't be honoured (and the folk with the booking didn't turn up).

Headline conjures images of Basil Fawlty giving the train a 'damn good thrashing'.
