We (family including non cycling 6 yr old and a mum who hasn't riden for a while) are heading there soon so I am looking for advice on bike hire places and routes to try, tips and things to avoid?

Mrs GDR and I used Mike's Bike Tours. Had a very pleasant tour in a small group (8-10 people)through Amsterdam and out into the countryside mostly on paths. Visited clog maker, windmill and cheese farm-very touristy but good fun. The tour leader was a hoot. Ageing British hippy who went to Amsterdam a long time ago and never wanted to leave its brown cafes. He led the tour using a handlebar mounted bubble blower and sported a pair of fetching white clogs with skulls painted on them. well worth checking out.
