  1. Decided to take my normal Innocent Path commute today to see what the conditions were like. Icy was the answer. Huge swathes of unrideable ice (that is until a chap coming the other way showed me his studded winter tyres). There are patches where the ice ran down the middle (where a compacted snow path had been created during the snow), but the longest of these was about 100-150 yards long.

I'll be sticking to the roads for the time being...

Last photo - what the ****?

Although it looks like they picked the right man out of the 3 to provide sufficient ballast, surely that will just flip as soon as the blade hits a bank of hard ice!

So now the cooncil PR cribsheet will read "but we've got 12 mini tractors and now even a quad bike"

  3. That was on Melville Street - contractors from Lightways trying to work out how to attach the snowplough, and pretty much failing. They tried moving it forward, but the blade was catching on the ground and there was lots of shouting to stop.

Thanks for the update and the photos. I think I'll keep clear of it for a few more days.

I rode it too and was pretty glad I was there and not on Old Deathtrap Road when the blizzard started! Mind you I have a shorter distance to go on it.

  6. Ah, you must have turned off just before I got to the western end. After seeing the chap riding the ice I really wish I'd invested in winter tyres! As he said, he felt daft buying them in the summer, but not any more!

I cycled this Monday evening...it was nasty even on spiky tires, very bumpy and rutted, not to be recommended.
