London Street at it's junction with Drummond Place has been identified for pedestrian crossing improvements by the City of Edinburgh Council's Pedestrian Crossing Assessment process. This consultation aims to present two design options to the local residents in order to take forward the preferred option.

Option 1: Puffin crossing, but road remains full width
Option 2: Uncontrolled crossing, but road narrowed to give good sight lines

Not really cycling related but certainly of interest to anyone who lives or moves through the area

    Klaxon:
I'm strongly for Option 2 on this one - it narrows the road and reduces corner radii to the point a formal crossing shouldn't be at all necessary.

The Option 1 puffin is also quite a long way off the desire line because of the statutory markings required on approach.

@Klaxon, did you read my mind. That was my thought too.

I’m strongly against Option 1 and strongly in favour of any measures stopping this being a rat run.

    BOLLARDS maybe.

    Juanito:
Wow... that's like a consultation that works. Pick an option, insert a comment if you want. Done.

Option 2 obviously. I can see why they wanted a signaled crossing, but having to set it back means drivers "won't see it" and pedestrians won't use it.

Option 2 forces the drivers to understand that they don't always have priority, which doesn't often work, but the more they build like that the more it might start to impact behavior.

Neither of the options are that great. Although option 2 will help to prevent left-hooks, uphill on NCN75, pedestrians will still not be able to cross due to the volume of traffic. And more could be done to prevent left-hooks e.g. speed-humps on Drummond Pl and building out into Drummond Pl itself.

Really, I think the scheme needs to go much further than it does.

It needs to address the underlying problem of rat-running through the entire area, by adding modal filters, etc.

When you filter out the rat-running through traffic, pedestrians will have no issues crossing at any of the junctions.

Please fill out the consultation - I think this is an important one, as it is on NCN75 after all.

    Yes.

Unclear how many cyclists use this - high on CCE list of ‘worst setts’.

This is a classic ‘something must be done’ call from local councillors in response to local residents trying to walk/take kids to school.

It usually starts from the basis that ‘traffic is inevitable, we just need a safer way to cross a road that is busy at peak times’.

It’s the sort of thing that should attract Sustrans and Living Streets to run local workshops with the aim of coming up with better ideas than CEC usually manages.

This may have happened, but I doubt it.
