Absolutely raging at the radio just now - John Beattie show on R Scotland hosting a cycling hate fest. Not a single real cycling advocate invited on. No-one talking positively about segregated infrastructure, no-one even suggesting taking space from drivers, figures quoted about people killed by cyclists (3) but no mention of the 1700+ killed by cars. One of the worst pieces of so-called journalism I've ever heard.

Am surprised to hear that - John Beattie has always been quite an advocate of cycling? & a victim of crap drivers?

Sounds like one of the hatefests that Kaye Adams periodically drums up.

Jodi Gordon of Cycle Law Scotland was supposed to be on that show?

Jodi was on the show, but her contribution was basically restricted to answering questions regarding the legality of cycling on pavements.

As Chris says, the whole segment was terrible. The leader was 'A lot of people are annoyed by cyclists. Are you?'. Cue various angry contributions comprised of the usual ill-informed anti-cycling views, supported by 'I nearly got hit by a cyclist' evidence.

Any leader for a discussion which is:
'A lot of people are annoyed by X. Are you?' where X is a target group should be banned at the BBC as basically whipping up hate. Did it literally say that? If so, complaint?

i've complained to BBC before about Radio Scotland whipping up anti-cycling sentiment on "war between motorist and cyclist" nonsense phone-in dramas

complaint went nowhere, neither did the appeal. they are convinced of their own impartiality by default

i suppose if your job relies on not recognising bias, you are deliberately just not going to notice it

@bax San, you would like the work of Greg Philo of the Glasgow Media Group. He so destroyed Mary Marquis on Radio Scotland in the 1980s on her unconscious bias that she insisted the filming was destroyed but the technicians on set saved Greg a copy. Bad News was the text that came out of it then followed up with Really Bad News.

  8. John Beattie appears to get Stockholm Syndrome the minute the frothing anti-cyclists phone in and rant.
