After last week's balaclavery, -5ºC begins to sound slightly warm and fuzzy. But -13ºC on Wednesday? *cries*

  7. I stuck to my bus plan. Tomorrow it's more a necessity than a choice. I'm already fed up with it.

"I stuck to my bus plan"

"We are aware that the website performance has been slow during morning and evening peak travel times recently. This is due to the bad weather and corresponding high demand for information during bus service disruptions. We apologise for the inconvenience and are working on improvements that will increase reliability."

    Sitrep, its lovely

@Ruggtomcat - thanks for update, convinced me to take the bike. Glad I did. It was frost-on-beard cold, but traffic was moving so slowly that I was able to make good progress in the wrong lane.

Roads largely dry, the slush is so cold that it's soft and sandy, just falls apart if you hit it with enough speed. Most bits of buslane I saw still impassable -busses not being able to pull into the recessed stops seems to be causing all the delays, either because they've not been cleared or cars have parked in them.

Plenty of bin wagons and parking wardens out and about.

I was all kitted out this morning ready, and then my boiler sprung a leak. Now working from home again, gets a bit boring really. *le sigh*

    Arctic conditions... aka, Winter.

    Arctic conditions

only cause the EEN can't spell Antarctic. Which would also be innapropriate, as neither are places where it really actually "snows".

Kaputnik's meteorological learning for the day - I found out that a blizzard isn't a blizzard if it is snowing - a blizzard is a blizzard when snow/ice that has already fallen is blown up off the ground

This from almost exactly a year ago. That's what is needed.

    YES
    Bring back Steam!
They also fitted steam guns to the front to blast away snow drifts when the impressive plough would get overwhelmed...

Quite. The "low tech" steam and mechanical signal Bo'ness and Kinneil railway run by the SRPS seems to have been unaffected by the bad weather and able to run it's santa specials.

DRS, who provide the locomotives for pushing the big snowplows up in the highlands, use pairs of 50-year old Class 37 locomotives - because they "work".

    mmmmm steam.
someone needs to push these links and videos to the press and kick off a nationwide discussion "We should bring steam trains back to all routes"

  22. Went down to Dean Village staking out the Kingfisher again, and the amount of vans (and one taxi) who tried to get up Bell's Brae was astonishing.

Every single one forced to reverse gingerly back down after wheelspinning to Kingdom come. Every single one of them driven by someone whose job it is to be a driver.

Didn't see too much idiocy on the way in, though I might have been unnecessarily peeped coming up to the Restalrig Rd/Sleigh Dr roundabout. I wasn't able to give my components a wash at the weekend so the slight rear-shifter stickiness I noticed leaving PY on Friday had worsened into a complete inability to change gear, though the middle chainring/largest sprocket is almost ideal for these conditions. Just realised after getting back from buying some un-gunging spray at lunchtime that I should have picked up a cheap dustpan-brush to keep in the office car park to knock off the worst of the slush in the morning.

I decided to wash my bike yesterday evening and get rid of the slush and grit and salt. Evidently I was trying too hard to economise on the hot water as I filled my bucket, because halfway through washing my bike and then rinsing it after, the water froze as soon as it touched anything made of metal.

Like all the spokes, sprockets, derailleurs, brake cables; it even froze solid in the gaps between the ribs on my fabby retro ODI Attack mushroom grips.

Just as an experiment, collect a nice big pile of guano and scatter it over a section of path to see if uric acid has the same effect on snow and ice as urea...

    Another day on MMW.

Seems like a waste of salt/grit.

Where were the 16(?) mini-ploughs today??

Seems like a waste of salt/grit.

Need a photo of the Borough Medical / Citrus Dental practice for a good illustration of that! CEC grit bin out the front and their own front steps and wheelchair ramp beautifully cleared and coloured red with a thick layer of grit - only to run right up to a snow-bound and ungritted Leamington Walk

Where were the 16(?) mini-ploughs today??

Maybe they lost a few more!
