People’s! I have a new junior splitshift in tow, we are looking to camp overnight somewhere between Callander and Killin . Don’t realky want to use the strathyre site as it sounds awful, was there several years ago and didn’t like !!! Any recommendations for wild camping up there? Obviously if it comes recommended then it’s not wild in the truest meaning but want junior to feel that we are in the wildest possible countryside but I know getting there , by surprise is going to be a good experience, weather dosnt seem to bother junior as he seems to be happy no matter what !
Will probably drive to Callander and meander without any plan ( apart from this cunning one !) hopefully coming across some magical site !!is the south Lochearn road area still pretty much out of the question camping wise? It always was back when I knew guys who went “ on the fishin” to that area !
Hi to all those who I haven’t spoke to for a while, am still biking but just not internetting much !! This week coming is the chosen time!

@splitshift, I did try camping just north of the path up Ben Ledi nearly thirty years back. Came on very heavy rain. So we packed up and hitched - first car stopped and took us straight back to Edinburgh (we had taken train to Stirling then bus to Callander). Put the Primus on in the flat and cooked the camping food but it was not the same.

Ha ha !! Primus in the house is never a good idea!! First time I did it the cat looks like it had a heart attack ! It must have thought there was a lion somewhere ! Then my mum discovered what I was up to !!! She didn’t know I had bought it! Second hand, and with a slight leak !!! Still flapjacks flavoured with fuel became a staple!!!

We had to use Primus during the three day week when the power was switched off. All candles and coal fire. We thought adventure. Parents less so

@amir and I cycled along the south Loch Earn road last May and it seemed to be a popular wild camping area. I think it's permitted there now.

Plenty opportunities here and not much competition for space (apparently) -

@Splitshift, you could sleep in a bus shelter and he'd love it, he's camping with his dad.

Bus shelters !!! My father told me of sleeping in the bus shelter opposite the kings house hotel in Balquhidder when he was a “ bothy cat” during the 60s , hitching lifts outside the Roman bar in camelon, all the way to Glen Coe etc! I did sleep ( sort off ) in the same place in the 80s but it had kind of lost it’s magic and aquired a foul smell !! I am no longer the Dad, I am the grandpa !!! The son requires a full platoon of soldiers to sleep outside and even then expects someone else to feed him !!! This mans army ain’t what it was ! Is the station above lox toll still clear enough for outdoor accomodation , does anyone know ? I’ll find somewhere just if I could appear like bear grylls and” find” the perfect site......,,,,
Parental and grandparental magic dosnt always need to be left to chance !!

Know the area well was up there 5 times this year. Its technically in the non wild camping zone just before callander but all the best places to camp are before callander in the non wild camping zone, not sure if a major issue if one night.

It's not camping but this thread seems as good as any for a tale which mentions a folding leather bathtub.
