George Square: more works

    Email from facilities at work says as below. These are CEC not university works, because of course the idea of coordinating this with the square being dug up a few months back is too difficult for both parties.

    Over the coming weeks, the City of Edinburgh Council will be replacing and upgrading the pavements and street lighting to the north, east and west sides of George Square as well as the south side of Crichton Street.

    The work will be split into 3 phases with the 1st phase starting on Monday 17th September:

    Phase 1 – Crichton Street – Southern pavement and eastern pavement within George Square
    Phase 2- George Square – Northern pavement
    Phase 3 – George Square – Western pavement

    As each area is being worked on there will be disruptions to not only the walkways, but also traffic flow and parking, which will also affect the surrounding roads, e.g. Charles Street, Charles Street Lane and George Square Lane, so please check the Council notices which will be displayed in these areas.

    Of course.

    UofE always manages to give the impression that they own/control most of this area.

    Perhaps only until the point of spending money??

    Pretty much. I tried raising various issues like the dire state of the cobbles at the northwest corner and was mostly met with a shrug and ‘this has to be raised with the council, nowt to do with us’…

    I suppose the festival moratorium on roadworks may have something to do with this.

    Incredibly, the Council has a statutory duty to co-ordinate road works (Section 118, New Roads and Street Works Act 1991). The Scottish Road Works Commissioner is meant to ensure that they actually do co-ordinate works.

    Clearly, the legislation isn't worth the paper it's written on. Still, not to worry - I'm sure the new powers in the current Transport (Scotland) Bill will definitely sort this all out...

    Not sure digging up pavements at the same time as the road surface would have been a good idea. At least we could still get past.

    Of course, there's zero chance of this resulting in any attempt to link Middle Meadows Walk with the Bayes cycle store in a way that doesn't involve conflict with pedestrians or spoke-chowing cobbles.

    I wandered through GS earlier today - very nice expensive looking paving and kerbstones being installed.

    However, I wonder if anyone has put any thought into why the old pavement was smashed to oblivion? I am not a fan of bollards per se, however installing a few might stop trucks destroying the new ones......

    See also: dire plastic fencing meant to contain what must be literally thousands of pedestrians spilling out onto the square every hour, because access to parking spaces cannot be compromised, oh no.

    Seriously, I will believe that CEC are serious about modal shift when they even mention pedestrianising George Square despite the fact it's the biggest public car park on the Southside.

    GC should be pedestrianised 100%. They could keep the Western most side for cars if they really wanted.

    The western side shouldn't really be parking either, it'll just create traffic along Crichton Street and the north side. The most conflict occurs on the north-east corner so bollards somewhere along Crichton Street are the only way to solve it.
