Slavery in Scotland only ended in 1799 when coal miners and salt-boilers (and their children) ceased to be the chattels of the mine and pan owners.

Hmm think there is a distinction between bonded labour (vile as it is) and the institution of chattel slavery as inflicted on black slaves - presumably coal miners children weren't sold away from them to other mines, women bred like farm animals, punishments of extraordinary brutality at the whim of the owner etc. I'm guessing that however unevenly applied there were rights under the law that meant a salt boiler or bonded woman could be murdered?
