A person who disses me on commute for letting her pass me then taking a tow asks for payment in form of best route from Balerno to Royal infirmary of Little France.

She cannot arrive at work clarty.

Maybe blinkbonny, colinton, oxgangs, fairmilehead, frogston road.

    Any improvements most welcome

Limited options east-west (and north-south!) From in South Edinburgh. Frogston Road would be the quickest way, and can be good fun if you're of a particular mindset, but nobody's ever described it as a "quiet route". Turn left down Gilmerton Dykes Drive, then follow Quiet Route 61 to ERI.

Braid Hills Drive is probably friendlier than Frogston Road but still not "quiet", plus involves a detour on fairly busy roads to get there.

Cluny Drive is even worse. And you have to go up Kirk Brae to avoid Old Dalkeith Road.

Hermitage of Braid is quiet, and lovely, but involves a detour and could involve dubs if it's rained recently.

    Yeah that is a poser.

Balerno to Craiglockhart on the WoL then canal. Greenroofer's railway snicket. Balcarres Street.

Up Braid Road to the Hermitage, Double Hedges, Inch Park, into Craigmillar Castle Park, right up the cycle path to the krankenhaus?

    Maybe.

Yes, I forgot she also wished to avoid the virgin railway (.innocent)

I might be tempted,to go canal, meadows, innocent then up Craigmillar castle myself

A very long way round but avoidant of much traffic.

Route home she has no condition about clartiness.

Her dept fought a nine year battle to avoid the move hut it has happened.

She is finding the roads very aggressive.

Avoiding clartiness probably means doing the hilly bits first and easier bits later. I'm assuming she is already a decent cyclist*. The WoL path is easy but loses height; I would tend towards staying on the main road, then down Gillespie Road, up Colinton village, up Redford Road, and thence Frogston Road and Captain's Road.

The Gilmerton climb is a bit wearing after then but diverting into the valley might be doable; round the back of the Morrisons, across Gilmerton Road, Mordun Park Street, Craigour Avenue and pop out opposite OPD6.

For a quieter route, I would agree with IWRATS' route as far as the Morningside clock. Cluny Gardens is well graded but it's busy.

Instead, turn left at the junction, then turn right at Canaan Lane, and go through the Astley Ainslie to South Oswald Road and St Alban's Road, South Lauder Road and Fountainhall Road. West Mayfield, Craigmillar Park, Lady Road (using the crossings at the railway roundabout if need be), and then Old Dalkeith Road the rest of the way. However, Lady Road to Cameron Toll to Inch Park and through to the bottom of Kingston Avenue would be even quieter, but requires an awkward right turn onto ODR.

    * Edit: Pre-subsequent Gembo post suggesting otherwise.

She is a very decent cyclist. Before I knew her and before I commuted by bike (still taking eldest to nursery in town) I remember seeing her racing the bus.

I fear there is No quiet route.

It says rather a lot about the state of cycling infra in south Edinburgh that the best we can come up with in terms of a "quiet route" involves a significant detour in order to take advantage of Lady Road.

WoL or WoL/Woodhall Rd to Colinton, then there may be options round back of Redford barracks, Braid Burn paths from Oxgangs to bottom of Comiston Rd, through Hermitage, whatever the best route is through the Inch, ERI?

Do we get points for style? This almost looks direct if you squint a bit. Lots of slightly squiggly bits that can be bypassed with bits of main road depending on mood.

The little 'dirt' track up at Blinkbonny is actually OK now, Hermitage of Braid less so and busier to avoid sadly.

I prefer Snowy's answer though, surely you would evaporatively de-clart while flying down from Roslin?

Jonty points always available for style of route and indeed with the English language - evaporatively declart for example is ten points

I had workjed out a similarish route to Jonty's yesterday. https://cycle.travel/map/journey/80323

One thing that's quite nice about a route like this, is that there are actually quite a few options and trying them all out does add some fun to the commute. For example I wouldn't go through the Braids on a regular basis, but when there are less dog walkers out it's a nice option.

I also note, removing the waypoints, cycle.travel recommends NCN 75 (water of Leith), NCN75 (canal), NCN1 (meadows and innocent) although and then a final bit along Craigmillar Castle Road - "Total length: 18.9km (53 minutes). Includes 50m on major roads; 70m pushing; 5.2km unsurfaced "

versus my suggested route: 16km (45 minutes). Includes 300m on major roads; 90m pushing; 3.8km unsurfaced

I like cycle.travel in that it tends much more heavily to push you on to traffic-free routes
