If only JK was into cycling not horses

I had a belter of a little loop this morning. Went up to Harlaw then along the top road (note kirkgate (thanks @jonty)closed at top on 20th Oct, big water pipeline going under the road). Passed Mount Parnassus then round the back of the farm cottages and round to torduff and torphin. I used to do this route when the kids were wee and I had limited time. It is lovely in the autumn. Descent impaired by many dog walkers but you can't have everything. Descent continued down from Bonaly to Colinton. I was going to come back up the WoL path, but nosied along the road to the houses that were built into the water of leith riverbed. You can cycle through these houses and there is a short path that takes you to footbridge over the river but I doubled back as I had spotted steps. These took me up into the wood hall housing estate where Campbell Park is, possibly the least used park in Edinburgh by acreage?

I then proceeded along Woodall road until I reached the ultra smooth Tarmac of the JK Ridng Centre. I was Rolling along there sheltered by the mature hedge she put in (causing local planning objector Archie C to salivate with admiration). Rolling along, you see what I did there? Anyway the area was a little dilapidated until she bought it and now it is very spruce. Just before the gates to the big house I took the footpath to Blinkbonny. Went throught the hamlet then took the lymphoy road back to Balerno. All good surfaces and quite dry (even the surface of the moon craters after the farm cottages at torduff had some of the holes filled in). There must be a cycle or running race in this. Would involve JK allowing it and Woodall road being shut. Anyway, who needs to race, the route is nearly all private roads that walkers and runners and cyclists are perfectly entitled to access. How good is that?

It's all a bit mad isn't it, brilliant paths all around (thank goodness as I took a roadie mate from the Blinkbonny road along the path towards Colinton on the promise that it was 'just a short link' after a ride involving maybe one too many quite bumpy 'short links' and this one proved to be quite not-short) and pretty surroundings. I understand one of the buildings is a horse treadmill?

PS: I think you mean Kirkgate instead of Kirkbrae?

I used to love riding around Woodhall when on the commute to Heriot-Watt.

I thought about buying a flat in the block next to the big house, but the facilities for non-car owning but workshop-minded owners weren't great. Always liked the architecture though, post-Art Deco verging on International Style.

I never knew that there was a block of flats in there as well. I live not far from there and spend a lot of time up and down that road. SO tried to take the baby for a walk around the grounds and got politely but firmly directed back to the path by a not very friendly gardening man.

I notice that the stables are for sale now.
Clearly the fact that they are unable to do anything commercial with the stables is an
    issue for JK.

Gembo is correct though that the road and area are very pleasant now. There is a big field that is nice for walking through and a steep gravel path that takes you up to a wee path over to the old golf course (unsuitable for non MTB but a pleasant push up)

I don't know the area at all well but I've been poring over maps for nice rides and those roads caught my eye. I wasn't sure if bike access was allowed right along Lymphoy Rd but if it is, you might have just given me this week's explore.

@Arellcat: My wife used to own a flat in that block. It reeked of damp. It quickly got so she couldn't stand it any more and she put the flat back on the market after about six months IIRC. She actually moved out to live with her mother while the flat was still on the market.

I went past the stables at the weekend. I didn't realise that JK had built them. Not did I notice a for sale sign. How unobservant am I?

Mr fimm mountain bikes along Lymphoy a lot. You have your Right Of Responsible Access on a bike, remember.

Never saw any for sale sign? Not just stables but all the vernacular buildings that must have been part of the wood hall hamlet have all been done up to a high degree of spec. The Art Deco block of flats is odd. It is not high rise more like a London style apartment bloc. Curious in middle of countryside.

@trixie you can get right along the lymphoy. The kirkgate will be closed at the top for the pipeline. You can see it, blue pipe all the way along from the bypass above Juni green etc.

The lymphoy starts near the bottom of the kirkgate and I think the diversion might be impacting on blinkbonny but the lymphoy should be fine. It had cones to allow the tree surgeon to clear the little cottage but these also would not be meant to stop a bike.

So easily up the WoL path, cross the bridge with Currie kirk to the rear and left. Before the mud path becomes ultitrec rubber there is a wee path to the left that takes you up via the grand design engine shed that has the shingle roof and the Currie baptists and start of lymphoy is on your right. Nice road, about a third of way along on right there is a little glade with the two commemorative stones, the one that fell over replaced with upgrade, tells you about the little coffins being found in 19th century. Half way along road swings down to left and back up again. Probably the bridge is crossing the lymphoy burn. Lymphoy house was for sale too recently.

For sale sign for "Woodhall stables" is located on Woodhall Road way up before the hill that drops down under the bypass by Campbell Park.

I don’t think the stables for sale are the Rowling ones:

Shouldn't the headline of a listing for an equestrian facility state the number of stables instead of bedrooms?

Ok, I'm looking at going Lymphoy, Blinkbonny, Woodhall with the WoL getting me to and from. In terms of strenuousness, which direction is least taxing? Start at Woodhall Rd or start at Balerno?

Ahhh my bad. That looks like a nice property if you want an operating cattery and some hosses.

I've used that cattery in the past. I thought it was very good.

    @Trixie, pretty much eeksy peeksy.

If going from Balerno likely your prevailing wind would all be when you were on the WoL Path which is sheltered.

If you go that way you come out of Lymphoy at Kirkgate turn right then left (you are going around the perimeter of the graveyard) you will then be all the way along the road until you go through Blinkbonny. At the bend that takes you down towards main road at Currie there is a wee path to the right, this takes you to Woodhall.

    Enjoy.

Excellent stuff, gembo. Ta. I took myself to Torduff and Harlaw the other week. I did a fair bit of off-and-pushing to get up but was very taken with it once the up was over. And the slog bit was pretty balanced by the whizz down. I wanted to explore lymphoy etc then but had a fear my legs wouldn't tolerate me coming to a dead end somewhere and doubling back.
