Can anyone identify any really solid facts in this story - I managed to locate a DfT press release, but nothing more exact than that... and every newspaper seems to be repeating the same quotes and so on. I see no dates. I see no (few) specifics.

That's a useful article (at least in comparison to the minimal information elsewhere). So to summarise...

    1) There's been a safety review consultation process (which led to the public saying all the obvious stuff - good stuff, but this is just what you'd expect - link).

    2) Westminster government has given a little tiny bit of money intended to be spent on close passing. We know of no guidance or limits - therefore this could prove irrelevant (simply allowing for a good press release).

    3) Westminster government has promised to review the Highway Code to improve what it says about cycling and walking - but we know nothing about how it will be improved, nor have they actually said what they think is unclear or unhelpful in the current code. There's no promised timeline or process. Even if they change the position of a full stop they'll have done what they promise.

    4) Oh, except there is one thing vaguely trailed/promised, which is the implication that people are going to be recommended to open their car door with the other hand so they can check behind them. That might be what's put into the Highway Code - a new simple point to say something like "you should consider opening the door with your left hand to make it easy to check behind".

Anyone care to disagree/correct me? I'm not trying to sound cynical, just to drill down to the actual facts...

Aye, but it's all part of the war on the motorist, innit?

A family member tells me that the BBC PM Radio 4 programme presented it in much this manner. - although the Cycling UK rep came across well. Haven't heard myself.

“Drivers may soon be required to always give way to cyclists and pedestrians when turning, thanks to a shake-up of the Highway Code. The Department for Transport (DFT) is considering introducing the measure in an effort to increase protection of vulnerable road users who are going straight on at junctions.”

They're a bit optimistic if they think the average motorist is slim/supple enough to reach round with the left hand and actually be able to see anything useful.

I know my neck barely allows me to do so therefore I always have a very good look in the mirror from different angles. One of the reasons I also now have a mirror on the bike.

@rbrtwtmn I caught a snippet. The anti was whining about motorists having to wait and how they paid for all the roads.
