Canny Man's probably leads for my least favourite pub in Edinburgh.

Staff are so unfriendly and the atmosphere was distinctly off for me. Perhaps I'm just an unwanted type though.

On the other hand, Salt Horse's only flaw is the difficulty of getting a table, love that place.

Was baffled by many of the choices/omissions in the article...each to their own and all that, but the Canny Man?

I was underwhelmed by the Canny Man. I hadn't come across Salt Horse previously though so will be giving that a try.

That is just a list of pubs, THe one in Southwold is the seco0nd worst in that town. If the guy from fife will row you over the river there's two better ones in Walberswick etc.

    None in Glasgow

Athletic Arms (AKA "Diggers") should be on all lists

Usual nonsense article, should be filed next to those ones detailing the "best towns to live in".

Everyone has their own list as to what a good pub should be, one persons good pub = anothers boring hole.

Good beer should be a prerequisite.

Diggers used to be decent, but IMO the quality and variety of beer there has gone down a bit. In that area I have always preferred the Golden Rule.

Mentioned in another thread I was in Holyrood 9A at the weekend - its decent, but bloody expensive (or maybe I am unused to "town" prices).

Up my neck of the woods, Argyle is head and shoulders above Earl of Marchmont, which used to be a good pub until the current owners bought it and screwed it up.

@gembo - see my first paragraph re why no Glasgow pubs - clearly the compilers just didnt bother visiting !!

    Volunteer Arms was good for one thing;

    1) Overheard hair-raising conversations amongst the Morningside bourgeoisie.
    2) Old Mr Kerr's discharge from bankruptcy framed above the urinals.

No, it's been like that since at least 1990. Used to be my local when I bided in Morningside many moons ago, but I preferred "wee Bennets" as it was not only cheaper but friendlier too.

@crowriver, bennetts lounge is a restaurant frequented by mr and Mrs hankchief due mostly to its name Le Petit Mort.

Bennetts abides and is a boozer and a half.

@nelly, yes not bothering to visit places would narrow the list down.

The last time the grauniad did a list of pubs with add hill walking some very famous English boozers were joined by the grey horse of Balerno punching ever so slightY above its weight.

The Grey Horse has it's extension finished but they didn't pay the builders enough so they took the steps out the fire escape, so the extension can't be used!

    La petite mort. How intimate.

Seriously, Green Room no more? Had some epics in there back in the day.

Plus the Canny Man is nice I guess but isn't the owner a world class ********?

Was it the quantity of the quaffing that made you ill?

I've not heard of this Salt Horse place.

The Canny Man evidently won because of its cumulative decor. Years ago I remember unfriendly staff. Now have given up on it as it's so crowded.

    My own favourites are:-
    Lesley's
    Roseburn Bar (my local)
    Spylaw

Oh and should have mentioned Bennett's, which has been a favourite for decades.

There are two bars being referred to here: Bennets Bar which is next to the Kings Theatre in Tollcross. Excellent bar. Also a lounge to the rear, which used to have rows of pints lined up at interval time for the orchestra players from the adjacent theatre. Maybe still does... And "wee Bennets" otherwise known as Bennets of Morningside. Great wee bar and still going AFAIK. Better place for a pint than Canny Man's, though the latter is okay on a quiet night.

Bennett's at Kings Theatre great boozer, you used to be able to walk inside the bar round to the lounge which also has a side fAcing the cut through street to the meadows used by all cyclists. This lounge is now the gender bending La Petite Mort restaurant where Mr and Mrs Hankchief had lunch. The other Bennetts up in Morningside I have neve been in.

Lesleys a great favourite, though I miss the thistle wallpaper. I am second generation there. Fourth generation in the Prince of Wales but that's in Aberdeen.

The Canny Man isn't even the best pub in Morningside, so claims to UK grandeur seem a bit off the mark. To be fair though, I've only been in once. The chat from fellow patrons was so comically rank that we chugged our pints and left sharpish. I have a feeling Nick Cook might like it though.

Wee Bennets has a "No bikes to be chained here" sign attached to the railings around its garden - a poor show.

Leslie's with the Snob Screens is of course a great boozer as has oft been mentioned by me, the Jewson Warehouse with the red bricks on the way to Leslie's used to have the wording spray painted along it's length The Velvet Undererground. Please note, not Underground, Undererground.

This was always a sign we were nearing Leslie's as it was Soooo far from Marchmont.

Ah, that's a pity. Not been in for a long time, just glad it is still going...

Just near Bennets in Tollcross was/is Burlingtoin Bertie or "Berties" colloquially. Used to be very much an "after pub" bar back in the days when I was residing in Marchmont. You could do a mini pub crawl starting off maybe in the Cameo bar; then a civilised pint or three at Bennets; then to the International Bar round the corner (or "I.B." as we knew it) for a somewhat cheaper round or three; then if your legs would still carry you soundly you'd go to Bertie's as they were open until 1am. Not great beer IIRC but you scarcely cared by that point.

Cannot see myself repeating such an experience at my age, but you never know: nostalgia is a powerful thing. All the bars are still open to, as far as I am aware...

Can I put in a word for the Dagda on Buccleuch Street? Used to be the Proctor's before a refurbishment many many moons ago. Small, intimate, no TV, good brew, only slight downside is no kitchen either, but that just concentrates the mind on the essentials.

Having said that I haven't been in it for a few years now ... so could be total crap by now.

Just checked out their Facebook page and it looks pretty much the same.

I am technically barred. For singing Elvis Costello's My Aim is True as a duet in the early nineties. Was called Proctor's then.
