I like to think that on City Cycling Paris, someone is asking where they can find a Jimmy hat.

Have you considered buying onions and string? And a big darning needle. Hang on I see the problem. Quite heavy and leaks onion juice everywhere. Forget I spoke.

I can lend you a copy of Sexton Blake: The Plague of the Onion Men and the Criminal Confederation if helpful.

A string of onions is v heavy (I made one last year with produce from allotment, for storage). I would agree that baguette is a better option, and can be used for ad-hoc snacking too - bonus!

A string of garlic bulbs would be lighter and have the added bonus of repelling vampires.

Strings of onions and garlic are available in Valvona and Crolla's on Elm Row.

Fruitalicious on Morningside Road might have some of the Roscoff onions or shallots on a string (I've certainly bought them before). Not sure if there were any left last time I was in but I should be able to post an update later tonight. There may even have been smoked garlic on a string.

Valvona not doing strings of onions or garlic anymore.

The onion Johnny history is quite interesting. Heyday in 1920s. Bikes festooned with roscoff pinks.

You can buy an Onion Johnny Depp Scarf.

Anton Quemer was last Onion Johnny in Leith 2004-5

They had them in the shop last weekend. I actually picked up a string of garlic to find the price (there wasn't one). They are a bit odd that way. I once went in for cannoli and they claimed never to have heard of them.

Yeah Cyclingmollie, I had the impression that the person I spoke to on the phone Knew nothing.

Have improvise with three mesh nets of three onions each from Scotmid. So saved a bit of money lost a bit of cred

Maybe a case of "If you have to ask, you can't afford it"? :-)

Too late, but there were only Roscoff shallots at Fruitalicious. The onions have sold out.
