I heard this on Sunday, I think, but have heard it before. It's like some sort of machinery, like a hoover, but from farther across the city. I can hear it in the north.
any idea what it is? drives me nuts.
CityCyclingEdinburgh was launched on the 27th of October 2009 as "an experiment".

Well done to ALL posters
It soon became useful and entertaining. There are regular posters, people who add useful info occasionally and plenty more who drop by to watch. That's fine. If you want to add news/comments it's easy to register and become a member.
RULES No personal insults. No swearing.

David Hume spinning in his grave.
@IWRATS a new source of clean energy to go alongside cats with buttered toast attached to their backs?
Nothing clean about graves @jdanielp. Not even those of enlightenment philosophers.
Apparently lots of noise complaints near Meadowbank at the moment, as the council is resurfacing Marionville Road overnight.
Don't think that'd make the sound you describe, though.
There's a premise near me south of Leith Links which whines at night, though not too loudly. Sounds quite fan-like. When you say "north" is it near enough to the seaside for it to be the machines processing the heaps of gravel and dust at the docks?
@the Canuck, had you been eating cheese before retiring for the night?
i wish i'd been eating cheese, but our provisions officer (me) has been slack lately. we'd just watched 'Allied' so i half thought it was an air raid siren for a few seconds.
Yesterday i opened windows to air out a large room and was treated to rotten egg... city living, meh.
we're near Ferry Rd, so closer to the water and leith than i always think. could be either the leith links machinery or something at the docks.
it's not distrubing, it's just, 'what is that noise???'
Could it be this - carried on the wind?

Wasnt someone in the Spurtle looking for the source of this noise? I think they found it.
